Prospect Update: Tyler Johnson (2020)
Norwalk recently advanced to a 3A state title game, and it has its two best scorers returning next season.
One of those guys is of course is Bowen Born, a top all-around player in Iowa. The other is 6-foot-4 sniper Tyler Johnson, another very intriguing prospect.
With his size and ability to shoot the ball, Johnson is a guy that could turn a lot of heads this spring and summer.
“I’ve just been working on expanding my game to off the dribble stuff, and also playing a little bit down low because I’ve grown a lot,” said Johnson, “So, my coach has challenged me a lot to play in the post, especially on defense, so getting stronger has been a big key for me.”
A do-it-all player who rebounded and assisted well in addition to scoring this season. Johnson just finished his junior season with averages of 13.6 points, 2.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. He made 62 3s at a 46 percent clip.
“We had a great year, we played for each other. Bowen is obviously a great player and I think our team complimented him really well,” said Johnson. “My role was to be one of the main scorers, and just run the floor and space it out and be ready to shoot.”
Johnson is now into his offseason schedule with Kingdom Hoops 17U, they started practice last week. He’s hoping to continue and see his recruitment trend upward.
“This past year a lot of colleges have reached out to me, some are Dordt, I had a meeting with them last week, and then University of Chicago, Simpson, Buena Vista; and a Division II college in Florida, also,” said Johnson.
“The state tournament really helped a lot with my recruitment. My coach said that at least seven colleges text him and asked for my phone number.””
Johnson added: “I’m just hoping this summer with Kingdom Hoops I can get a lot more recruitment. Hopefully those tournaments out of town can help spark my recruitment a little bit.”
