The Falcons didn’t have the luxury of multiple players above 6-foot-5, so they had to rely on small lineups consisting of three, or sometimes four, guards. One of those guards who were key in their success was sophomore Jeremiah Stanton.
Stanton is a player that has shown great improvement over the past six months. As a freshman, he played on the junior varsity team, but once summer came along, Stanton’s confidence began to grow. That was especially on display during the Super 80 Showcase last August. Playing against the top sophomores in the Baltimore area, Stanton made his impact known immediately with his outside shot.
It was more of the same this season for his high school team. Coming into this season, Stanton wasn’t necessarily expected to contribute as much as he did, but fast forward to the conference title game, and Stanton was second in scoring with 16 points.
“I feel like this season I improved on my quickness,” Stanton told Prep Hoops. “The speed of the game was really fast for me at first to adjust to, but as I started working out more and listening to my coaches about shot selection, the game starting to become easier.”
At 5-foot-10, speed and quickness were two areas that Stanton had to improve on in order to be a consistent impact at the varsity level. As I saw him from the beginning of the season and at the end, you could tell he was more poised and not rushing his shot or his overall pace of play.
Still, Stanton knows there’s much more to work on for the spring and summer.
“I want to keep working on my mid-range game,” Stanton said. “My three-point shot is pretty good and I’ve gotten better at finishing around the rim, so I want to get the mid-range down so I can be a threat at all three levels.”
How does Stanton describe his game?
“I just try to be a winner,” Stanton continued, “I’m not really worried about scoring. Like today (following the MIAA B Conference championship), I had to be more of a facilitator and make sure I’m pressuring the ball 94-feet. I’ll just do whatever I have to to win.”
