Prospect Spotlight: George Wilson (2021)
It’s hard to stand out on a deep team sometimes, especially when you’re a young player on an experienced team as well. Green Run sophomore George Wilson has shown a lot of promise early in his career, however he hasn’t put up huge numbers, so how is that possible?
Wilson has some great physical tools. At 6’4″, he has the frame of someone much older than himself, and he has athleticism that continues to get more explosive and better as he grows into his body. He also plays with a good motor on both ends, and he does the dirty work like control the glass and create more opportunities for himself and his teammates.
It’s all apart of the Green Run culture that Head Coach Kenneth Harris has built. Unlike many coaches, Harris plays upwards of 10 guys on any given night, and they all are athletic, play hard and have their own unique skillset. It’s something that has helped the Stallions get to the state tournament, and something Wilson feels is a big reason they are so good.
“I think we have great team chemistry,” Wilson said. “AJ is passing the ball well, our team is playing well, just everything is going good right now.”
With senior leader and region player of the year Ashley James running the show and leading the team in scoring, it’s up to Wilson to find other ways to contribute and make a positive impact for his team. He does a great job at this, as he’s interchangeable from the wing to the post and he plays hard on both ends of the floor. He knows he has to continue to work on his offensive game, but he feels like that will come with time.
“Rebounding is a big thing for me,” he said. “Just always playing hard, running the floor and scoring when I get the opportunity to. I need to continue to work on my finishing and scoring moving forward.”
While Wilson is focused on getting better when the time comes, there’s only one thing on his mind right now and that’s getting the opportunity to put a ring on his finger and send his senior out the right way.
“My only goal for real is to go to states right now. During the summer, I just want to get better and maybe get some more college interest.”
We aren’t the only ones who see the major potential in Wilson. The young forward already holds an offer from Hampton, and while he has yet decided where he’ll play this summer he should have multiple teams courting him. If he continues to progress in the right way, expect Wilson to become a much more recognizable name in the next few years.
