Silverton is heading to the state tournament as the number three seed and the tough 5-foot-11, 160-pound point guard isn’t afraid of what’s ahead. The junior is self-assured with what the Silver Foxes bring to the table and there’s no doubt that a state title is within reach.
“I feel good with where we are at,” Gonzales said. “Coach says this all the time, we’re a defensive oriented team and I feel like we’re strong with that headed into the state touranment. We’re probably a little more confident this year than we were last year. Overall we’re just a deeper team and you don’t see a drop off when we go to our bench. I feel super good.”
Individually, Gonzales has certainly been helping the team achieve its goals. The Silver Foxes are balanced, but the point guard has been getting the job both with scoring and distributing the ball. A fearless penetrator, Gonzales continues to work on himself to improve his effectiveness.
“I’ve been doing some training up in Portland and I’ve been trying to work on the physical aspect of my game,” Gonzales said. “I think it’s coming along pretty well.”
Gonzales has started to pick up some early recruiting interest. He notes that Hawaii-Hilo has recently been in contact and he’s also gotten some e-mails from some East Coast schools asking where he might be playing on the AAU circuit this summer. The University of Portland has also been looking at him for awhile and there’s no doubt it’s interest he has welcomed.
“They’re a Catholic school and they’re in Portland,” Gonzales said. “But wherever fits me me – hopefully somewhere close. I’m a big family guy – family means everything to me, so I’m looking for somewhere where my family can come together and watch me.”
Gonzales hasn’t completely determined his AAU plans yet but says there’s a good chance he’ll return to play with his team from last season, which is now named Cascadia. But first there’s the state tournament – and Gonzales and Silverton face Crater on Wednesday night.
Gonzales currently ranks as the #19 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
