While those departures were hard to fill, they provided Cassius Carmichael, 6’5 SF 2019, the opportunity to step up and play a bigger role. Carmichael took that opportunity and ran with it.
By seasons end,Carmichael averaged nearly 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 steals per game en route to earning a host of awards: 1st team all-region, region defensive player of the year, 1st team all-conference (5A), and 1st team all-district.
According to Carmichael, his success at the high school level has earned him two offers: Glendale Community College and South Mountain Community College. Further, he has received interest from Park University, Ottawa University, and Buena Vista.
Carmichael would like to go somewhere that “can help me financially get through schooling.” Further, he would like a school that helps him get an education that will benefit him in the future.
He would also like a school that is close to home, but he is willing to go out of state to play. Moreover, he cares about playing for a “good basketball program with a good culture.”
The colleges that are interested in Carmichael have noted that they love his versatility and motor. Further, while he did not attempt many 3s this year, he did shoot 62% from 2 and 45% from 3.
His efficiency makes him an intriguing prospect and has drawn the attention of these coaches. Moreover, his length gives him a lot of upside and the ability to play multiple positions.
Carmichael leaves Ironwood as a three time Varsity letter winner and having made the state tournament three years in a row. Further, he had the opportunity to play high school basketball with his brother, Cody Carmichael, who is at South Mountain Community College and the single season leader in steals and second in all-time assists for Ironwood.
Cody mentioned that it has been “amazing” to watch his brothers growth. He noted, “[Cassius] started as someone who didn’t care to play basketball and just did it as something to do. Then, he ended up loving the game and going to every workout… He has become a great player, and I love to watch his games.”
Cassius noted it was “a fun experience” to play with his brother as it “helped me to push myself to be better and work harder at practice [due to having] one of my biggest motivations there in the gym with me.”
The Carmichael brothers have both played at a high level for the Eagles of Ironwood and will both play the game at the collegiate level. Cassius’ development and landing spot will be fun to watch as he has a lot of upside. He will participate with Team Zona this club season.
