On the final day of the season, these two tremendous senior guards competed against each other in the Class 4 state championship game and both had sparkling performances in Grandview’s 69-64 victory.
Collins scored a game-high 34 points to complete a tremendous postseason run in which he led a young and inexperienced team on an improbable run to the Final Four and a near state championship. He accomplished the task despite playing on an injured knee suffered in the Dragons’ semifinals victory over Ladue
Sorrells scored a team high 26 points for Grandview and showed once again that he is a big money player when championships are on the line. He scored 24 points in Grandview’s victory over Raytown South in last year’s state championship game.
Both players took on added responsibility in order to make sure their teams advanced to the championship game. Collins, a Saint Louis U recruit, has been a pass-first point guard his entire career who added more scoring to the tune of 22 points a game. Sorrells is one of the top perimeter shooters in the state, but he made the transition to point guard as a senior to replace 2018 Player of the Year Jordan Lathon to keep the Grandview machine rolling.
