PHD Playoff Central. This past Saturday all of the Class AA spots were earned with little to no surprises. Rival Central gave Stevens a run and of course 10 seed Huron knocked off 7 seed Watertown so there was a mild upset. Next Thursday’s Class event is now set with 1) SF Lincoln facing 8) Harrisburg and 4) Brandon Valley taking on 5) RC Stevens on the top side. The bottom half of the bracket includes 2) Yankton facing 10) Huron and 3) SF O’Gorman battling 6) SF Roosevelt. Looking at this I ask you if the seeds should be resorted for the state tournament? Meaning Lincoln would face Huron and then Harrisburg takes on Yankton. Or does is really matter?
The Big Stage. There are double headers around the state which is an outstanding deal for basketball fans in South Dakota. The best value may be at Pierre TF Riggs HS or Chamberlain HS where you can see a Class A game and a Class B game. Watertown HS hosts the 1/16 game with the traveling highlight squad Tea Area against Redfield/Doland followed by Madison against Tiospoa Zina. Lennox HS has Lennox vs Cheyenne-Eagle Butt and Sioux Falls Christian vs Mobridge-Pollock.
Upset City? Flandreau knocking off Sioux Valley is surely one of the bigger upsets in terms of teams making the final 16. Flandreau qualified for the Class A Sweet 16 with a 64-54 win over Sioux Valley over the weekend. What will be even more memorable is the game that 6-foot-3 freshman Tash Lunday had putting up a double-double on a big stage against a Cossacks team that only had a couple seniors but was still talented at 16-5. Tash had 22 points and 14 rebounds making a name for himself in a big way state wide.
Hat Tip to the Career. Drew Cole is the best available senior talent in the state of South Dakota and he had an outstanding career playing for both Brookings High School and the South Dakota Attack. Cole is a 6-foot-5 skilled wing with a pretty jumpshot and the ability to play multiple sports at the college level. Cole was a fun player to watch throughout his career so today he gets our “Hat Tip to the Career”.
