PHD Playoff Central. The Class B Region semi-finals for the most part bring together the teams with double figure wins and match them against one another in the perfect atmosphere for the start of March Madness! Regions one, six, and eight all have excellent pairings this evening bringing together talented teams for pressure packed games. Bridgewater-Emery vs Irene-Wakonda on the same floor means Trey King looks to try and put together another monster number performance to try and upset Bridgewater-Emery. Arlington (17-4) vs Wosley Wessington (15-6) is certainly a headliner this evening. Arlington’s junior pair of Trevor Larsen (5-foot-11 guard) and Casey Stegeman (6-foot-9) junior are coming off excellent games. Larsen scored 21 points with five triples while Stegeman had 11 points, 11 boards, and three blocks vs Deubrook Area. St. Mary vs Colman-Egan will play their third game of the season (they’ve split the games). They opened the season with the Cards getting a victory but Colman-Egan won the mid-season overtime contest 64-59. In the last game 6-foot-4 Colman-Egan junior Dalton Voelker was a monster scoring 32 points with 22 rebounds. Let me say that again, he had 32 of his team’s 64 points PLUS 22 rebounds.
The Big Stage. In Class A there are some excellent games this evening that including Lennox (15-5) vs Dakota Valley (14-6), Red Cloud (14-6) vs Winner (14-5), and Hot Springs (17-3) vs Rapid City Christian (16-4). Dakota Valley beat Lennox 78-70 just ten days ago. Lennox junior Will Daugherty had 26 points but the Dakota Valley trio of Paul Bruns, Nathan Rice, and Charlie Cox came at their opponents like an avalanche in the final three quarters. Cox brought the energy with a near triple-double, Rice hit threes, and Bruns put up 24 points and 13 rebounds.
Upset City? Cinderella right now is Garretson and after beating West Central the state is now curious if Drew Blosmo and the squad can pull another upset against 14-7 Dell Rapids. Dell Rapids won the first game 75-57 just eight days ago. In that game Garreston was up 16 points quickly but by the mid-point Garretson clawed back and made it a game. Five-foot-10 Dell Rapids junior Logan Ellingson had a game high 24 points.
Wednesday/Thursday Standout. Sophomore standout Connor Libis had another huge night scoring 30 points on Thursday night giving Dell Rapids St. Mary a 56-37 win over Chester. Sophomore big Max Herber nearly supported Libis with a double-double. Libis continues to put up monster numbers for a team that has only lost three times.
Hat Tip to the Career. Chris Mohr and Alex Tammen. Mohr and Tammen are a pair senior 5-foot-8 guards that balanced scoring more this year than the creations for talented teammates of the past. Chris and Alex spent a lot of time in a Chester uniform as quality playmakers . Both had solid careers for Chester Area High School as top 100-125 level seniors in the state.
