The third of the state tournament will take place on Saturday evening with good games going on all over the state. Some teams were expected to be here and others have shown us that games are never won on paper, so let’s begin with the 1A and 2A matchups.
Henderson Collegiate is rolling! In their first two games of the state playoffs, they won by an average of over 40 points each night. This team seems to be focused and have been playing at a high level pretty much all season, so John A Holmes will definitely have their work cut out for them.
Granville Central vs West Columbus: If you want to see some young talent, this is the place where you will want to be. Granville Central Sophomore Guard Terrance Harcum is a bucket getter, he has seen all types of defense so not much rattles him. West Columbus Sophomore Forward Brandis Kelly has some star potential in his own right as he can score, rebound and facilitate from the Forward/Center spot.
Winston Salem Prep vs Bishop Mcguinness: This matchup consist of two teams that are respected programs in the state, both putting up 20+ win seasons. Winston Salem Prep has quite a few weapons with one of them being Senior Guard Chaz Gywn who is averaging just under 17 PPG, we have seen him score the ball well on numerous occasions and he may be a player that’s called on in the clutch. BMHS 2020 Guard Jake Ledbetter is a player that we saw last season that could absolutely fill it up scoring wise, he competes at a high level and is one of the guys that you want with the ball in his hands during clutch moments.
Walkertown HS continues to make their run as a #12 seed as they will face off with East Rutherford on Saturday. Walkertown features 2020 Guard Jalen Cone, who we all know can really fill it up scoring wise when he wants. If he can continue to lead his team on both ends of the floor, they will have a chance to continue playing next week.
Farmville Central vs Kinston: They said the doors open at 5pm so our advice to you would be to make sure you arrive earlier than that or you may end up locked out. Both teams have a good amount of talent on their roster and a mixture of upper and lower classmen talent that you have to be impressed with. Farmville Central features 2020 Guard Justin Wright and 2021 Guard Terquavian Smith both are player that can score a high amount of points in a small amount of time. Unsigned Senior Forward Dyquavis Wilkins is one who has seen a significant rise in his stock since he has made the move over to Farmville HS. Kinston HS features 2021 Dontrez Styles who is a major athlete, while 2020 Guard Chance Minot is one who seems to play even better when it’s a big game like this. 2020 Guard Isaac Parson is another player that the Kinston squad will need to play well as we are sure that they will face all types of pressure throughout the matchup.
Greene Central vs First Flight HS: The contrast of styles in this matchup are clear, so it will be interesting to see what team is more successful at doing what they do. First Flight is an up-tempo run and gun type squad that is led by one of the top three point shooters in the state in 2020 Guard Dylan Blake. While Greene Central plays the game at a slower pace, making sure that big man Imajae Dodd gets going on the offensive end. The team that will win this game will be the team that dictates the tempo, if First Flight can knock down shots, they will have a chance to get the win.
