Farmville got out to a huge lead and coasted through the remainder of the game without much of an issue. However alot can change in two months and we know Vance County will come out looking to redeem themselves and stay alive.
Players to Watch
FCHS 2021 Terquavion Smith & 2020 Justin Wright: As one of the top backcourts in the state, they are a huge reason for the success of this squad. Both can score the ball at a very high level and they bring the intensity that you have to love.
Vance County Senior Guard Corey Baldwin: If VCHS wants to pull off the upset, they will need a big time game from Baldwin. He is their leader without a doubt, and if he can get it going scoring wise early on, then things could get interesting.
Washington County vs West Columbus: This one should be a good game, although West Columbus is a younger team, they play the game with a high amount of intensity which is what they will need vs a Washington County squad that has been absolutely dominant. Washington County comes into this matchup winning their last two games by 22 and 44 points, so to say they are playing good basketball right now would be somewhat of an understatement.
Players to watch
Washington County Senior Forward De’Andre Downing: He’s been solid throughout the season, putting up numbers of 13 points and 11 rebounds on the night. At 6’5 he has solid size for a wing but at the high school level he can play inside and dominate the glass.
West Columbus Sophomore Forward Brandis Kelly: They will need his size, strength and passing ability to pull off the upset. He’s young so he doesn’t have a ton of experience as far as playing in big time games like this but his skillset and strength has made us believers in what he can do.
More Matchups to Watch
Henderson Collegiate vs Roxboro Community: Henderson Collegiate and Roxboro both enter this round after coming up with wins in pretty close games last round. Roxboro features Senior Guard Dylan Jones who is dropping 16 PPG as well as Junior Guard Jalen Bailey who can put the ball in the bucket at 13 PPG. What makes Henderson Collegiate so dangerous is the amount of weapons that they have, on any given night they have multiple players that can score the ball. Sophomore Guard Javonte Waverly is dropping 16 PPG and Junior Guard Kalib Matthews is averaging 14 pts and 7 rebs a night.
Forest Hills vs Shelby HS: This 2 vs 3 matchup should be a good one as well, Shelby is a team that has depth and is coming in with a record of 23-5. While Forest Hills comes in with experience and hunger to repeat as champions. They have a good mixture of young talent to go along with the senior and juniors on the squad, one player that we feel is an intriguing prospect is 6’7 Sophomore Jamylan Blakeney. Any time you have a player his age with his size and potential, you have to be excited about what he could possibly be in the future.
