It seems like all season long McEachern has been the head of story lines and if your thinking that then you are correct. McEachern is coming off their best season ever in the school’s history after finishing with an outstanding 32-0 overall record and winning the school’s first ever boys basketball state championship. With that being said, McEachern’s own head coach Mike Thompson was named the 2018-2019 Naismith Coach of the Year.
The Naismith Coach of the Year Award is an award that goes to the best overall high school coach of the high school season. This season, the Indians competed in several national and top events around the country and state. Those events and tournaments included the Georgia Elite 8 Tip Off Classic, Under Armour Classic, Tournament of Champions Classic, City of Palms Classic, Cancer Research Classic, Bass Pro Shop TOC, and the Spalding Hoophall Classic. They defeated top programs like Sunrise Christian (KS), Imhotep Charter (PA) twice, Findlay Prep (NV), Paul VI (VA), Rancho Christian (CA), Shadow Mountain (AZ), and others.
In the last four seasons, Coach Thompson is currently sitting at a 113-11 overall record at McEachern and 87-4 overall with both 2020 PG Sharife Cooper and Aubrun commit 2019 F Isaac Okoro. That includes four straight region titles, two elite eights, one final four, and one state championship appearance. What will be in store for next year with Indians? Especially with some key seniors heading out the door. That we will find out when the time comes.
