The 2019 GEICO Nationals field included, in seeding order, La Lumiere (IN), McEachern High School (GA), Monvterde Academy (FL), IMG Academy (FL), Oak Hill Academy (VA), Wasatch Academy (UT), Sunrise Christian (KS), and University School (FL). The national tournament is set to take place at Christ the King (NY) on April 4-6th. There is just one problem with that field. The McEachern Indians are expected to not make the trip despite HC Mike Thompson reporting they will be going.
Coach Thompson spoke with SUVtv right after winning the school’s first ever state championship and stated that they will be headed to New York and he has already signed the contract when asked if they are going to the GEICO Nationals. You are probably asking yourself now, why aren’t they going? USA Basketball will be hosting a mini-camp for some of the top 2020, 2021, and 2022 prospects in the nation at the same time as the GEICO Nationals in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
2020 PG Sharife Cooper is expected to attend that camp and will not be able to attend the GEICO Nationals. Cooper has put on a dynamic display all season long and averaged 27.8 points per game while dishing out 8.2 assists per game. It is not a surprise he received and accepted the USA basketball invitation and especially after attending his first mini-camp back in October. His running mate, Aubrun commit 2019 F Isaac Okoro, stated he wanted to focus on getting ready for the Nike Hoop Summit on April 9-12th and where he can display his talents in front of NBA scouts.
Isaac was apart of the USA U17 National Team back in July where they captured the gold medal. After a very long season, the McEachern starting five, including Northwestern commit 2019 F Jared Jones and senior guards Alyn Breed and Quinton McElroy, are looking to focus on their futures and recruitment. The Indians certainly do not have anything to prove as they finished the season 32-0 and defated multiple top programs across the map. Their legacy will forever be remembered in the peach state.
