Well we officially have a new name sitting atop of the 2020 rankings, and that name is Reece Beekman. The thing that impresses me most about Beekman is his ability to affect the game in a ton of ways without scoring the ball. If you need him to go get you rebounds, he can do that. If you need him to be a playmaker for others, he can do that. If you need him to guard the other team’s best player, he can do that. There are so many things that he can do without the ball in his hands. Reece is at the top of these rankings for now, but this is the closest running for top player in the state since we started the rankings in 2016. Don’t be surprised if Jalen Cook overtakes the top spot again before the pair graduates.
2) Jalen Cook 6’0 PG Walker
While Jalen Cook has moved down from the top spot to the 2nd spot in the state for the 2020 class, we are by no means hating on him or his game. If you look at the Prep Hoops national rankings, we have him at 49, and will still have him in the top 60 in the next national update. No other national rankings service has him nearly that high. Jalen Cook is one of, if not the most underrated recruit in the country for the 2020 class. The fact that he isn’t thought of as a consensus top 100 player for his class is a travesty. However, at the next level, I do worry that his ceiling is limited as a below the rim scorer that isn’t capable of doing a lot outside of scoring the ball.
3) Chanse Robinson 6’1 PG Lincoln Prep
Robinson is a do it all guard that plays with the heart of a lion. He is a stereotypical Louisiana point guard. He is uber athletic, is going to play hard every single play, but brings a limited skill set to the table. He is able to dominate the high school game in a way that few are capable of, and he is an absolute stat sheet stuffer. There aren’t many players in the country, let alone the state that is capable of getting you 40 points or 20 rebounds or 12 assists, but Robinson is capable of any of those on any given night.
4) Ladamien Bradford 6’4 PG Jonesboro Hodge
Bradford is another guard that definitely fits in the stereotypical Louisiana guard mold. He is athletic, with a lightning quick first step. He can get wherever he wants on the court, and because of his size is able to see over the defense and deliver passes on target. He struggles to shoot the ball from deep, but because he has such a good feel for the game, he is a good cutter, so I think he will be able to overcome his lack of knock down shooting.
5) Thomas Howell 6’7 PF St. Mary’s
Howell is a big bodied Power Forward that brings a ton of athleticism to the table. He was able to move up and make his first appearance in the top 5 for the 2020 class because of his ever improving skill set. He is a lot more comfortable putting the ball on the floor than he had been in the past, and his jumpshot is continuing to improve. I still think he is a year or two away from really being able to shoot the ball at a high level from 3, but he has made all the right steps along the way to be able to get there.
