Freshman of the Year: Tamin Lipsey (Ames)
17.0 points (52.3 FG%), 4.7 assists, 2.2 steals, 3.9 rebounds
A relatively easy choice here for freshman of the year, not because this class didn’t produce this season (they did very much so), but because Lipsey — who came into the season as the state’s projected best freshman — lived up to, and even exceeded his high expectations. The 6-foot-2 guard is ultra quick and has high-level skill. Iowa State offered last summer, we expect plenty more offers to roll in this summer.
Carson Toebe (Clear Lake)
11.2 points (40.2 3FG%), 5.3 assists, 1.4 steals, 4.6 rebounds
We had suspected that Toebe was legit one of the best freshman in the state just by looking at the nice numbers he was posting. He confirmed that he in fact is a top prospect in Iowa when he went for 16 points, six rebounds and five assists during his first-ever game at the state tourney earlier this month.
Trevion Labeaux (Waterloo East)
9.8 points (67.6 FG%), 1.7 blocks, 5.0 rebounds
There’s a lot to like about the season this 6’3 forward pieced together. He was a starter for a Class 4A team that went 12-9, not many freshman can say that. If that wasn’t enough his shooting percentage, which is an area where freshman typically struggle, was a sterling 68 percent. He put up impressive blocks and rebounds numbers, too.
Jacob Runyan (Johnston)
8.2 points (80.8 FT%), 2.4 assists
A lot of other freshman in the state posted more eye-popping numbers than Runyan did, but what separates this 5’8 point guard from the pack, is the fact that he posted these very decent stats while starting all season for a very good Class 4A squad. It’s rare to see a point guard start at this level, and Runyan was poised and solid all season for the 15-7 Dragons.
Aaron Graves (Southeast Valley)
18.5 points (50.3 FG%, 46.8 3FG%, 82.3 FT%), 5.6 rebounds
The best freshman scorer in the state this season was this sharsphooter from Southeast Valley. The scoring is great, but what makes it better is the exceptional efficiency at which he made the shots. If all of that wasn’t enough, Graves was also a stellar rebounder, the best on his team this season.
SECOND TEAM
Karter Petzenhasuer (Spencer)
14.8 points, 2.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds
The 6’2 guard led Class 3A squad Spencer in scoring this season. He was the team second-best assistser for the Tigers.
Corey Phillips (Ames)
6.9 points (51 FG%, 45.3 3FG%), 3.9 rebounds
Yet another Ames Little Cyclone makes this article, Lipsey and Phillips are going to make up one of the best duos in the state for the next three years.
Tanner Te Slaa (Boyden-Hull)
9.4 points (81.8 FT%), 3.0 rebounds
What we like best about Te Slaa is he was able to post these numbers despite playing on a very deep and talented squad. Boyden-Hull was the Class 2A runner-up.
Josh Dix (Council Bluffs Lincoln)
10.2 points (51 FG%, 51.9 3FG%), 1.8 steals, 2.4 rebounds
An absolute sniper, this 6’2 guard shot a blistering 51.9 percent from 3-point land. That’s not only the best among all freshman (minimum of 30 makes), but among the very best in the state, regardless of graduation year.
Austin Hilmer (North Linn)
10.4 points, 2.7 assists, 2.4 steals
As a key player for the Class 2A title champion, Hilmer was going to get a serious look to make this list. And his numbers were too solid to deny.
THIRD TEAM
Cole Glasgow (Dallas Center-Grimes)
11.9 points (47.8 FG%), 2.6 rebounds
Lucas Lorenzen (Okoboji)
15.4 points (53.6 FG%), 8.7 rebounds
Hogan Hansen (Waverly-Shell Rock)
14.0 points (80 FT%), 3.2 assists, 4.8 rebounds
Sam Wilt (Anamosa)
10.8 points, 3.4 assists, 1.9 steals, 2.8 blocks, 7.3 rebounds
Armonniey Thomas (Marshalltown)
10.4 points, 2.5 steals, 3.8 rebounds
Honorable Mention: Corey Miner (Mason City), Eddie Burgess (Montezuma), Drake Wemark (New Hampton), Kaden Hall (English Valleys), Adam Mattes (Newton), Zach Erwin (Camanche), Kaiden Gage (East Buchanan), Jaxon Meyer (West Lyon), Noah Allen (Newton), Luke Menster (Springville), Jevin Sullivan (North Polk), Darren Richardson (Iowa City High), Dawson Forgy (Winterset), Dillon Kuehl (Urbandale), Amarion Davis (Burlington), Gabe Burkle (Prairie), Jonathan Beverly (Hoover), Trey Lewis (Johnston)
