Continue ReadingI headed over to Thousand Oaks, CA to watch the first day of hoops action for the #HUSTLESZN Kickoff. There were many top teams from AZ and from California. I watched three games and a part of another game.
Here were some of the Day 1 standouts I viewed:
2020
6’9 PF Osasere Ighodaro of Desert Vista HS (Powerhouse Hoops 17U Rise)
Ighodaro is extremely versatile to defend inside and out. He made it very difficult for the The Truth players to take the ball inside and score it. He also is very long and fluid and covers a lot of ground. He has nice bounce but is also helped by a quick second jump and seems to get off the floor effortlessly. He scored it inside the paint and his presence was felt if he blocked or altered their shots.
6’3 SG Alem Huseinovic of Chaparral HS (Powerhouse Hoops 17U Rise)
Huseinovic (pictured) shot the ball just about as well as you can with a game high 18 points on only 8 shots. He hit four 3pt shots made plus a couple nice pull-ups. What also stood out was his on-ball defense. He is strong and can move his feet quick laterally.
6’1 PG Evan Nelson of Salpointe Catholic HS (Powerhouse Hoops 17U Rise)
Nelson started off slow with his scoring but defended his position and facilitated. He found his groove in the second half by getting to the basket and hitting one catch 3pt shot plus his always tough pull-up.
6’3 SG Jaren Johnson of Lynwood HS (The Truth 17U)
Johnson is a natural scorer from all three levels. He has decent size for position and is smooth with the ball. He can comfortably hit from mid to the 3pt line and can get to the cup with good quickness. He has nice length but needs to continue to develop his build and aggressive play. He is currently ranked #40 in So-Cal 2020 rankings.
2021
6’3 SF Peyton Watson of Long Beach Poly HS (The Truth 16U EYBL)
Watson is a long baby-faced pro-typical wing. He seems like he takes the longest strides on every step. He covers a lot of ground on the perimeter defensively and gets many deflections. He is a capable perimeter shooter but is more of a downhill player currently. He can throw it down above the rim easily and once he puts on some weight, watch out, the current #18 ranked player may jump up.
2021 wing Peyton Watson (Long Beach Poly) from @TheTruthEYBL 16U is going to be a good one. @PrepHoops #HustleSZNKickoff pic.twitter.com/4Hd35RYPjB

6’6 PF/C LeRoy Williams of Buckeye HS (Inspire Dreams Become Reality 16U)
Williams is a load down low to deal with. He punished the Fastbreak team with rebounding the ball in and out of his area and the lefty scored it seemingly at will. He can rip through and score it through contact plus has some nice footwork. His hook shot is polished and if he can get a little more bouncy or push out another inch or two, he will be a major problem in the West Side.
2021 6-6 post LeRoy Williams was impressive with close to 20 pts 10 rebs. @FrankieBur @PrepHoopsAZ #HustleSZNKickoff pic.twitter.com/JIzDyfkabv

6’0 PG Jimari Grayson of Apache Junction (Legion of Hoops 16U)
Grayson is a strong downhill pure PG. He has good upper body strength to absorb contact and score. He is a pest on the ball defensively and makes smart passes to teammates. He can run off the ball and defend either guard spot with his speed, strength and lateral quickness. Once he gets a more polished perimeter jumper, he will go to another level.
Nice sleeper from Apache Junction. Jimari Grayson. Strong downhill PG. @LegionOfHoopsAZ @PrepHoopsAZ pic.twitter.com/oLWjGaDdvq
