Sam Fisher is an All State Talent. Sam came into the state tournament averaging 16 points, seven assists, four boards, and three assists a game. Sam made 50 percent of his field goals this year and half of his rare three-point attempts. In the state title game it was more of the same. Seven scores on constant attacks plus 8 of 10 foul shooting. Fisher chased down seven boards and out-raced North Woods defenders for hard cut scores and baseline attacks. His pull-up jumper stopping on a dime and hit with a slight fade made sure the defender had no chance to react. It was the perfect finish to an outstanding game.
The Defensive Efforts. Cade Goggleye in an all state level talent three years running now. A guy that has been on all the spot highlight shows with his game winners and countless monster performances. Henning Coach Randy Misegades put junior Isaac Fisher on Cade and the results were magical. Fisher denied one pass away like he wasn’t getting a ride home and he chased Goggleye every place on the court. When Fisher got caught on a screen, no worries. His defensive talk led to several players stepping over on the screen which often teams became Parker Fraki, Fraki and teammates did the perfect job of switching over and forcing every Goggleye to be hotly contested. Cade was 1 of 8 at the arc and only 2 of 13 overall. The work of Isaac Fisher, Parker Fraki, and others was top notch, and just another example of the team basketball Henning plays.
Passing Clinic. Henning shot a 55.3 percent for the game leading to a 67-42 victory and a state title. The passing of this team was a piece of perfection. Every ball rotation was snapped quickly and led to a moving player. There was rarely a pass to a Henning player that was standing with two feet stuck. Nearly every pass was to a cutter in the corner, a curling player to the ball, or to a sprinting teammate going at the rim. North Woods tried a couple zones, they switched players in man, but nothing worked. They didn’t have the defensive discipline nor activity to keep up with the constant actions that Henning brought at them. And few teams all season did which is why Henning is leaving Minneapolis with gold medals.
Respect to North Woods. The Grizzlies put together a 91-7 record the last three seasons with three of those seven losses taking place in the Target Center. Three silver medals is a tremendous accomplishment. First place may have evaded them so far but that should not discredit the tremendous accomplishments of Cade Goggleye and his teammates. North Woods isn’t going away either. Trevor Morrison has one more year remaining after a 13 point, 6 rebound season and Darrius Goggleye was just a sophomore scoring ten points a contest.
Back to Back? It’s a little early to be thinking about that, Henning just one their title 30 minutes ago. That said Isaac Fisher, Blake Wallevand, and Parker Fraki return to the team next season meaning three of the best four Henning players have another year in the Henning uniform. Fraki scored 13 points with 5 boards and 5 assists in the title game, while Wallevand had dozen. Isaac Fisher scored on half of his eight field goals but his biggest job was defending Cade and he received an A+ for that. Henning will be in the spot light next year too. They are playing in the Granite City Classic and the Perham event (both Breakdown events) against top Class A teams in 2019-20. The Henning kids will be ready for one more!
