SACRAMENTO, CA—During the playoffs in the Southern Section, things can get a bit redundant at times watching the same teams and match-ups over and over again. However, the CIF State Championships can get quite intriguing because there is a bit of the unknown involved, especially with the lower divisions as Ribet Academy and Fresno Immanuel come immediately to mind.
Snookey Wigington (Ribet Academy)
2020, PG, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: Moxie comes immediately to mind when describing Wigington. He pushes the break at a frenetic speed, yet has the ability to stop on a dime and nail the mid-range pull-up. He needs to learn to change speeds abit as he has a tendency to force the action, but he’s a playmaker at both ends of the floor. His speed, quickness, and active hands comes in handy as he was a menace on the defensive end for the Immanuel guards.
Tyler Powell (Ribet Academy)
2021, WF, 6-foot-5, 200 pounds
Ribet Academy wing Tyler Powell is one of the more explosive athletes in SoCal’s 2021 class.Joel’s Take: Powell did not have a efficient day against Immanuel, but it was not hard to notice the physical tools and overall skill set of Powell. He is strongly built wing-type who attacks the rim with a vengeance and has the skill and bounce to finish in traffic. His jump shot was abit off, but he shows good lift and balance when shooting it from deep. Playing on balance and not forcing the issue too much will help his efficiency and overall game.
Jordan Rodriguez (Reedley/Immanuel)
2019, PG, 6-foot, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: Rodriguez is the catalyst for his team as he has the ability to impact the game in multiple ways. He is a true point guard who can score from all three levels and he knows how to manage an offense as well. Not too mention he exhibited solid leadership skills.
Kaleb Daglish (Reedley/Immanuel)
2019, C, 6-foot-6, 230 pounds
Joel’s Take: When it comes to some of the most fundamental post work I’ve seen this season, Daglish needs to be near the top of the list. His footwork is a thing of beauty. Keeping defenders off balance with up and unders and the ability to finish with either hand are part of the package. He shows great patience and he demonstrates his feel for the game with his passing. He is a below the rim finisher but due to his IQ, savvy, and footwork, he could play somewhere at the next level.
Shawn Rogers (Reedley/Immanuel)
2021, SG, 6-foot-2, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more intriguing prospects in the game was Rogers. He plays with no fear and isn’t afraid to make plays at both ends of the floor. He showed off his outside touch as well as his burst off the dribble. He can can finish with either hand and projects well as prospect heading forward.
