Farmville Central (32-0) 76, Forest Hills (29-3) 61
The Farmville Central Jaguars defeated defending 2A state champion, Forest Hills High School, of Marshville, 86-71 to win their second state championship in the last four years.
After Forest Hills jumped to a 10-2 lead, the Jaguars overtook the the Yellow Jackets, from near Monroe, with a 21-3 run to take a 23-13 lead, by the end of the first quarter of their championship affair.
Championship game Most Valuable Player, Justin Wright a junior guard, led the way for Farmville Central with 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Terquavion Smith, a sophomore guard, was close behind Wright, finishing with 22 points and three steals. Smith, has already committed to play collegiately at North Carolina State.
Guard Rande Harper was also in double figures for Farmville Central, as he contributed 12 points, while Dyquavis Wilkins, a very athletic, 6-6 senior added nine points for the victorious Jaguars.
Nas Tyson led Forest Hills with 22 points and eight rebounds in his final game for Jaguars. The senior, who signed to play at Lenoir-Rhyne, became the school’s all-time leading scorer, during his outstanding four year career.
Trey Belin, a high flying 6-4 senior forward, added 17 points and seven rebounds for Forest Hills. Jamylan Blakeney scored 15 points for the Yellow Jackets, while last year’s championship game MVP Jai Rorie finished with 12 points.
Farmville Central shot 50 percent in the game, including seven, of 16 from behind the three point arc.
Forest Hills shot a respectable 42 percent from the floor, but the Yellow Jackets were a cold six of 25 from three point range.
Congratulations to Farmville Central and their coach, Larry Williford, for their undefeated season and their 2A state championship.
Congratulations to Forest Hills and their coach, Matt Sides, as well, as the Yellow Jackets came within one win of winning back to back state championships.
Both schools and their communities can be very proud of their teams.
