First, the backcourt players (the look at backcourt players will come here and in “Part II”) . . .
Among the many standouts were two of the better point guards in the L.A. City ranks the past couple of years in Ronald Mitchell (Fairfax) and Dominique WInbush (Taft).
Mitchell (pictured), was part of a “three-piece” backcourt combination that also included Ethan Anderson and Robert McRae that was as good as any in California this season.
He defended, on the ball, as well as any player at any position at the event.
Winbush was an All-L.A. City selection at Crenshaw as a junior before transferring to Taft where he helped the Toreadors earned spots in the L.A. City Open Division and Southern Region Division I playoff brackets.
He challenged Johnny Clausell of Leuzinger and Kendall Collins of Inglewood for the title of “fastest player, on the dribble, in the building”.
Among the other backcourt standouts on hand were superb jump shooter Fernando Gomez of St. John Bosco and Kadar Walker of Bakersfield Christian (who was a member of the Compton Magic 17s squad last summer that was rated the top club team in the country).
