The quick 5-foot-8, 145-pound point guard from Rainier Beach had been hearing from schools at a number of levels but there was one program that made a commitment to him early. They stayed on him all year long and recently, Curtis decided to return the favor and decided to join them for his college career.
“I’ve committed to St. Martin’s,” Curtis said. “I like how the coaches are hella cool. They’re relaxed and laid back and let you play and I think that’s good for my play style. I’ve been out there a lot to games, practices and all that – I’ve been around a lot.”
True, St. Martin’s was the only offer on the table for Curtis. But given how close he had gotten to the program, Curtis also liked the opportunity in front of him too. “I feel like I’ll be able to come in and play my game and get other people involved and get my shots off too,” Curtis said. “They have a lot of seniors so I know that the team will be open and there will be a lot of slots open. So I’m just ready to come in and work.”
Curtis described how he’s going to prepare for his freshman year with the Saints. “Probably getting my teammates involved more at times and obviously I’m still working on everything,” Curtis said. “I’m still working on the basic stuff like shooting and dribbling, but as far as team (stuff) I feel like I can keep on learning how to become a leader. I just want to be able to lead my team, prop my guys up and get us wins.”
With his college commitment all set, Curtis looked back on his senior season. It didn’t end with a 3A state championship but it was a year he felt was well worth it. “I think we had a good season overall,” Curtis said. “Unfortunately we didn’t finish with the goal we wanted to but I felt like I built up a lot of relationships this year that will last a long time.”
Curtis ranks as the #27 player in the PrepHoops Washingotn Class of 2019 rankings.
