The game started as intense as it finished with the Del City Eagles coming out as the underdog should and punching Tulsa Memorial in the mouth. Demont Crutchfield got hot early for DC and led them to a two point lead after the first quarter.
DC did a great job of creating pressure and forcing Tulsa Memorial’s guards to break the press. This was a successful gameplan until the Chargers began to go to what got them here. Throwing the ball to Kalib or Keylan Boone and playing off of them.
Although DC held on an kept the game competitive, Tulsa Memorial held the lead from midway through the second quarter on. Kalib Boone was unstoppable down low. He consistently pulled the plug on any Del City run with timely layups or offensive rebounds.
He literally finished everything around the rim shooting 7-7 from the field. He never did too much down there. So many times you see a big man want to put the ball on the floor too much when they get it in the post. However, Kalib caught the ball and went straight up not allowing DC to help and recover. He also had grabbed 17 rebounds and had 5 blocks.
Keylan Boone natural skills on the perimeter being 6’7 is what makes Memorial so unbeatable. He gives them a level of versatility that no one else has in 5A. Keylan did a great job of finding his spot up opportunities from three in the first half. In the second half, he used his size advantage and decided to join his brother down low to control the game.
Keylan scored 20 points grabbed 6 rebounds and blocked 5 shots as well.
A big x-factor for Memorial as well was Brashawn Finch. He was an all-tournament performer this weekend and it was no different in the championship game. He came off the bench and scored 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. He was another matchup issue for DC to deal with.
Veterans like Will Hill and Kavon Key didnt necessarily play well on offense but they filled in the gabs for Memorial and made key plays to help the Chargers keep control of the game.
There are certain moments in high school basketball where a team has one or two foundational talents where they take over the class they are playing in and dominate the competition of their era.
Kalib and Keylan Boone have done that the last three years and this era for Memorial will be remembered for years to come.
