Saturday’s state championships were amazing games to watch as several teams and players stepped up. Moeller capped off an undefeated season defeating St. Vincent-St. Mary 52-44 in Division I. Trotwood-Madison came back from an 8 point deficit to defeat Columbus South 77-73 in Division II. Harvest Prep overpowered Lutheran East 55-42 and Crestview knocked off Berlin Hiland 58-38. Here are my top performers from championship Saturday.
Amari Davis (2019) Trotwood-Madison- After back-to-back seasons of falling short in the state tournament, Davis finally accomplished his goal of bringing a state championship back to Trotwood for the first time in program history. On a night, where Davis struggled early on to get going on the offensive end, he helped on the defensive end contributing to a furious Rams comeback against a talented Columbus South team. Using his length and athleticism, Amari was a difference maker for his career and will be missed.
Sammy Anderson (2020) Trotwood-Madison- The Rams point guard came out in the first half on a scoring frenzy. Getting to the rim with ease off the dribble drive, Sammy gave Trotwood plenty of points to start off their championship game. Although he struggled defensively on the ball, his toughness and willingness to play physical was impressive to me and he will be a name to watch next year.
Kalen Etzler (2021) Crestview- The Knights young forward had a field day against an undersized Hiland team. Between his outside shooting and his performance scoring with his back to the basket, Kalen was an offensive nightmare for the Hawks as they struggled at times to keep him in check. His ability to alter shots with his presence alone in the paint was truly spectacular.
Seth Wilson (2021) St. Vincent-St. Mary- Wilson put on a performance to remember last season in the Division II state championship. This year, Seth again put on quite a performance. A tough guard, especially for a sophomore, Wilson has a very nice jump shot, especially when pulling up from seemingly anywhere on the floor. With range near the college 3PT line, Seth created headaches for Moeller throughout the night and will continue to thrive as a scorer as he continues his prep career.
Miles McBride (2019)- Moeller- Deuce really stepped up late for Moeller as they struggled for much of their game. McBride is one of the most athletic guards I’ve seen this season, and especially made his presence known on the offensive end. A high IQ guard, Miles was able to run the floor and made smart decisions which was crucial in a game where turnovers could cost you a game. He will be a nice asset to West Virginia going forward.
