Below I give a breakdown of the scores from today’s quarter final matchups and then standouts from the winning teams. Stay tuned for a piece on standouts from the losing teams.
St. Johns 70 St. Maria Goretti 58
DeMatha 79 St. Francis 74 Double Overtime
Gonzaga 69 Bishop Walsh 59
Paul VI 68 Mt. St. Joseph’s 65
2019 5’10 John Wilson | St. John’s College High School
The starting point guard for the Cadets started the game with the first 9 points for St. John’s and was immediately drawing eyes from opening tip. He is a quick and scrappy guard that can get to the lane and finish. It was one of the more aggressive performances that I have seen from him and definitely could be a positive scoring punch for the Cadets for the rest of the weekend. He also dished out 5 assists. One of the most underrated aspects of his game is his rebounding as he is only 5’10 but finished with 7 rebounds.
2020 6’4 Darius Maddox | St. John’s College High School
It was an on night for Maddox as he finished with 15 points and looked poised to score the ball all game long. Maddox has the capability to score the ball in bunches with his jumper and can also finish well in transition. If St. John’s wants to beat DeMatha in the semifinals, Maddox’s scoring ability will need to be on point again.
2019 6’1 Jahmir Young | DeMatha
The Charlotte bound lead guard came up big in a double overtime win for the Stags. He shot 50% from the field finishing with 24 points and hit some crucial shots after Earl Timberlake fouled out. Charlotte is getting a good lead guard that can find open teammates, moves the ball well in transition and has shown he can hit jumpers from all spots on the court.
2020 7’0 Hunter Dickinson | DeMatha
It was another double-double night for the 7’0 junior as he finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds. St. Francis did not have the size to contain but tried to stop him with some occasional double teams. One key stat for DeMatha was his free throw shooting as he was 10 for 13 from the charity stripe. Defensively he altered shots and made it difficult for St. Francis around the rim as he had 4 blocks in the win.
2020 6’7 Terrance Williams | Gonzaga
It was another great shooting performance for Williams as he has really become a reliable knock down shooter for Steve Turner’s bunch from all areas on the court. In Gonzaga’s win he had 24 points and led them to get out to the lead in the 3rd quarter after they found themselves down by 2 at halftime.
2019 6’0 Xavier Joyner | Paul VI
It was definitely the best performance I have seen this season from the 2019 unsigned senior as he finished with 15 points, shooting 5 for 6 from behind the arc. Paul VI made it part of their game plan to get Joyner going in this game and that happened 4 minutes into the game. If Joyner keeps shooting this well tomorrow they have a good chance of making it to the finals on Saturday.
