Bolingbrook, Il — Prep Hoops was in Bolingbrook for class 4A Regional Final action as Bolingbrook faced Joliet Central for a chance to move onto the next round of the playoffs.
Jordan Myrick and Darius Burford lead a balanced scoring attack to fend off a scrappy Joliet Central team 78-57 on Friday to move to a sectional semifinal match up against West Aurora on Tuesday.
It was close for a quarter and a half then Bolingbrook got a spark off the bench as Anthony Thompson drained three three pointers in the 2nd Quarter and Bolingbrook never looked back.
In the 3rd quarter senior veterans Joseph Yesufu and Tyler Cochran made plays on both ends and ultimately the playmaking ability of Bolingbrook was too much for Joliet Central.
Here are 5 Takeaways from the regional final.
1. Balanced Bolingbrook
It’s hard to key in on one player for Bolingbrook because so many players can score and make plays, that showed Friday night as they had five players in double figures. They have lighting quick guards in Darius Burford and Joseph Yesufu who finished with 13 & 10 points and efficient wings in Tyler Cochran & Jordan Myrick who both were also in double figures scoring 10 pts and 13 pts. Forward Tyrique McMurrin came off the bench to score 13 points also. When you can have 5 players or more able to score double figures any given night it makes it tough to game plan. West Aurora will look to slow down Bolingbrook’s balance attack Tuesday.
2. Yesufu Steady and Battle tested.
Point guard Joseph Yesufu was once again steady for Bolingbrook the floor general who is a 1,000 point career scorer showed poise all game and early when things were close and play was a little sloppy for both teams Yesufu made key plays both scoring and dishing it out to teammates. He was a key contributor his sophomore year when Bolingbrook made it down to state and they will lean on his leadership to try to make another run this year.
- Joliet Central is scrappy and there was no quit in them
Joliet Central did not have the playmakers on offense like Bolingbrook and were not as deep a team but they fought hard all game and there was no quit in them. 6’4’ Jr Kennell Sutton showed some promise scoring the ball and Post Kendrick Williams battled down in the post. They had some athletes but lacked the overall skill set of Bolingbrook but even down 20 they played hard.
- McMurrin and Thompson provided Spark
Seniors Tyrique McMurrin and Anthony Thompson came off the bench to provide scoring punch for Bolingbrook. 6’5’ F McMurrin was efficient around the rim scoring and rebounding for Bolingbrook he ran the floor for putbacks and had a solid night in the paint scoring 13 points. 5’11 guard Anthony Thompson came out hot in the 2nd quarter while the game was still at arm’s length and hit three three pointers to push the lead and give Bolingbrook some scoring as they struggled to get into anytime of rhythm early on.
- Kennell Sutton is raw put showed potential for Joliet Central
The long wiry 6’4’’ wing showed some promise scoring for Joliet Central. He hit some nice mid range jumpers and a floater in the lane. He has some bounce and rebounded well. Will be a prospect to keep and eye on very raw showed some flashes. He finished with a team high 12 points for Joliet Central.
