Tyler Doyne – Steamboat Springs
Albeit in defeat it was Doyne that kept the game close and gave his chance the opportunity to advance. Steamboat lost 61-59 to Pueblo East behind Doyne;s 19 points. He was surgical offensively and when made sure to get to the paint with his work which ended up turning into fouls where he went 5-6 from the charity stripe. He is the third leading scorer on the team so it was a nice surprise to get an explosion from him for the final game of the season. He not only scored but took over the game in other ways. Doyne captured eight rebounds, had two blocks and multiple big defensive plays to try to keep them in the game.
Dallas Dye – Longmont
Make no mistake about it, Longmont is one of the best teams in the state and it is because they have so many players that can get going. In their 67-46 slaughtering of Pueblo Central it was Dye that had the hot hand and he did his work inside. He had 21 points and did not miss a single shot for the game. The forward has a good feel around the rim and is an efficient scorer. Not only that but he also put up 15 rebounds and further showed that he is able to take over in games on one of the best teams in the entire state.
Donta Dawson – Harrison
You want to talk about an underclassman having a good season, Dawson is having an incredible year. The sophomore is averaging 16.6 points and 6.5 rebounds a game and in their 61-57 win over Golden it was the Dawson that remained cool, calm and collective. Dawson has solid size and uses his frame to get going in multiple ways. He finished the game with a game-high 20 points, knocked down two 3-pointers, got a block and kept the train rolling for this Harrison team.
Javonte Johnson – Cheyenne Mountain
A player that has put in his bid as one of the top players in the state is Johnson. He completely took over in Cheyenne Mountains 64-63 overtime win and he was his usual self. He does everything and is a player that has no quit in him. He is a natural born leader, a walking bucket, a solid defender and ultimate competitor and all of that was on display in a big way. The thing about his play was he finished the game with 27 points on the night but he only hit one three-pointer which shows you that he was aggressively trying to make things happen and finish. Everyone knew who would be getting the ball but still he delivered and that is what you need from a player of his caliber.
Tanner Baird – Holy Family
Holy Family is as solid as they come and they showed that when they took down a very talented Lincoln Lancer team. Holy Family won 65-54 and got solid production from one of the most consistent players in the state. He was a perfect 6-6 from the field and ended up with 17 points. He was a sniper from downtown and his three 3-pointers ended up being one of the biggest differences in the game. While the game remained close throughout the contest it was Baird that came through with a big fourth quarter where Holy Family outscored the Lancers by 12 points and it was behind Baird that they got going and won the game.
Will Maher – Mead
Mead is a team that is putting the state on notice that they are for real. Maher had 17 points on the night on a team that has multiple players that can get it done in the scoring department. It was Maher that they decided to go through and he did not let anyone down as he set up teammates as he has all season long and also finished through traffic. He makes the right play and had plenty of that as he finished up the season on a scoring tear and seen that continue in Mead’s biggest game. He plays the passing lanes well, defends at a high level and provides great energy.
