I don’t want to reduce the role of floor general to just a basketball-ese term for the point guard position, because I don’t believe that all point guards are floor generals and vice versa. I take into account the ability to move the ball, making smart passes, limiting turnovers, the ability to create shots for others and overall basketball iQ when I look for floor generals. These were the best floor generals at the 2A tournament in Oklahoma City last weekend:
Sando Hill 2019 Vanoss wing/forward
Sando Hill, a standout swingman for Vanoss, was one of the biggest bodies on the floor on Thursday night when Vanoss lost to Hennessey, and used his height to his advantage when making passes from the post to slashers. Hill is an elite scorer for the Wolves, and once he realized that Hennessey’s defense was keyed on him, he shifted his intention from being a score-first wing to a point guard, making nifty passes all night to fellow scorers.
Gage Barham 2020 Rejoice Christianguard
Heady floor general with eyes in the back of his head. Can shoot the ball, spot up, and make sharp passes. He was clearly reliant on the Rejoice Christian team chemistry to orchestrate offenses. He was also great at creating plays off-ball through his signals and motions to his teammates and the cuts he made.
Angel Rodriguez 2020 Hennessey point guard
Hennessey junior standout Angel Rodriguez was a masterful floor general for Hennessy, especially in its first-round win over Vanoss. Rodriguez was making sharp, down-court passes to generate scoring for the Eagles with accuracy, repetition, and grace. Rodriguez is a pure passer with a great iQ for the game and the ability to push the game’s tempo on a situation-by-situation basis.
Darian James 2019 Rock Creek point guard
Darian James may have been the most impressive passer at the 2A State Tournament. The 5-foot-9-inch senior makes some of the most spectacular plays with the ball in his hand you’ll see at this level. He was phenomenal in transition in his two games and made anybody a scoring threat with the ball in his hands. He was particularly great at penetrating to the rack before distributing the ball with precision to an open shooter or cutter in stride. He is a very fun player to watch and has a bright future at the next level.
Andrew Crow 2019 Rejoice Christian point guard
Andrew Crow was impressive for the championship-winning Rejoice Eagles as he dished assists all weekend. Crow was big in pushing the ball in transition and making smooth passes in stride. From the half-court, he was a scoring threat because of his shooting ability, allowing him to draw defenders and distribute the ball to the open man.
Nick Burchfield 2021 Minco point guard
Left-handed sophomore standout Nick Burchfield was a really terrific finisher with both hands. Thanks to his ability to finish in traffic, he was able to clutter the defense before kicking out to the wing or corner, setting up his teammates with scoring opportunities. He generates a lot of production on the floor thanks to his technical soundness when passing the ball.
