There are a couple with higher ceilings than others due to athleticism and positional size while others are better scorers but may not be as great of a prospect for the next level. Here’s a breakdown of the top wings and small forwards in the Sophomore class.
- Scotty Draud Scotty Draud 6'6" | SF Beechwood | 2021 State KY , Beechwood – Scotty ended up the third leading scorer in the sophomore class overall and 20th in the state in scoring. His impact on the game goes beyond the scoring column as he has put Beechwood on his back on occasion and helped to lead them to the best season in school history this year. With great positional size and a quick trigger on his jump shot, he projects as a solid D1 recruit and has already taken visits to Xavier and Cincinnati.
- Anthony “Rooster” Woodard, Logan County – Rooster is a player with a high ceiling thanks to his blend of length and athleticism. He actually could end up as a shooting guard or even a point before his high school career ends but if he can hit a growth spurt and get a couple inches taller, Woodard could be a dynamic wing player. He’s shifty off the bounce and doesn’t shy away from contact.
- DeAjuan Stepp DeAjuan Stepp 6'5" | SF West Jessamine | 2021 State KY , West Jessamine – Stepp didn’t make the big strides I was hoping to see this year but with Dalton Bruner graduating, he has no other choice but to step up and be the man for the next two seasons. Coming off a season where he averaged 15 points and 7 rebounds per game, DeAjuan has a big 16u AAU season coming up. With good size and length, he has a good chance to move up near the top of the rankings if he can start to play with a motor all the time and reach his high potential.
- Wyatt Vieth Wyatt Vieth 6'4" | SF St. Henry | 2021 State KY , St Henry – Wyatt quietly had a great season for the Crusaders as a Sophomore and established himself as the second best sophomore in northern Kentucky behind Draud. Vieth averaged 21 points and 6 rebounds per game while shooting 51/34/79 overall and often being forced to play out of position as a post more often than he should have. He lacks ideal athleticism but his skill level is good and motor is not an issue for Vieth.
- Sam Conley Sam Conley 6'3" | SF Spencer County | 2021 State KY , Spencer County – One kid in the class who has good athleticism is Sam Conley Sam Conley 6'3" | SF Spencer County | 2021 State KY . Already over 1,000 career points for the Bears, Sam is going to be close to a 2,000 point scorer by graduation. He put up good numbers with 18 points and 7 rebounds per game this year and could raise those next year with better perimeter shooting and starting to become a better rebounder when the ball is out of his area. If he proves he can guard athletic wings laterally, he can reach the high D2 or low D1 level before graduation.
