But the Sophomore group has some talent at the top to make up for what it lacks in depth. Here are Kentucky’s top post players in the 2021 rankings.
- Darrius Washington, Fern Creek – Long and athletic, Darrius is a prototypical rim running big who thrives in transition and can score with his back to the basket. Washington is a good passer and is a willing passer out of the post if a double team comes. The biggest question surrounding Darrius moving forward is if he can have his motor running all game, every game. With the physical gifts he has, Washington should be an elite rebounder. There is no reason he shouldn’t average 20 points and 12 rebounds per game as a Junior next season.
- Trey James, Sheldon Clark – James averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds this season for Sheldon Clark but slips out of the top 5 in the class rankings. As stated in an earlier article, with Trey, he’s going to have to show and prove everything on the AAU circuit this season. He should be dominating the competition he sees at Sheldon Clark where he’s 6-8 inches taller than practically everyone in the region. If he comes out this spring and summer and averages anywhere near 18 and 11 against the Adidas teams he’ll play, he will be a top 50 level player nationally.
- Cearius Warren, Southern – “King” is one of the most frustrating kids to evaluate in this class. Cearius has all the tools to be a high major recruit. College coaches have told me he has the “it” factor they love. So why only 7 points and 8 rebounds per game at Southern this year? His motor is a big reason why. Warren is an athletic freak who should be rim running and dunking everything while protecting the rim on the defensive end. Hopefully he turns the corner this summer. Warren has the potential of being the best player in this class. If he starts to do that, watch out.
- Zek Montgomery, Fern Creek – Montgomery had a really nice season for the Tigers after a transfer from North Bullitt. Averaging 12 points and 7 rebounds per game, he and Darrius Washington make a formidable Forward tandem for Coach Schooler. The only thing limiting Zek is his current status as a “tweener” prospect. He’s not big enough to be a power forward and not yet skilled enough to be a wing. He may get there eventually though. After shooting 2 for 19 on the season from 3, Zek needs to be in the gym getting up shots every day this offseason until he proves he can shoot it from range.
- Noah Gordon, Shelby County – Noah did a great job in the off-season of transforming his body and getting in good shape. Unfortunately, his Shelby County team wasn’t very talented and limped to an 8-21 record. Gordon averaged 11 points and 6 rebounds this year and double teams all season took a toll on his shooting percentage where he was only a 40% shooter. Gordon has flashed the ability to stretch the floor with shooting in the past. It would be interesting to see if he can show that some more in the future and could open up his offensive game a little more.
