There are players in the 6-10 range who could make big moves up the rankings with a strong AAU campaign and others who are a growth spurt away from top 10 players in the class. Here’s a look at the Top Point Guards in the 2021 rankings.
- Jaden Rogers, Fern Creek – Rogers is quick and athletic with a dynamite first step. Jaden is starting to develop into the leader and floor general he’s going to have to become in order to run a team in college. If you were handicapping which Sophomore are most likely to get their first D1 offers this summer, Jaden is high on my list. He has all the makings of a mid major or better point guard in college and could go higher with another inch of height and a more consistent jump shot.
- KJ Crump, University Heights Academy – The prototypical floor general, Crump knows how to run a team and distribute the basketball. Coming from a high powered UHA program, KJ is at his best in transition looking for the open man. With his limited size, he will need to continue developing into a lockdown defender on the ball and improve his perimeter shooting after only hitting 27% from three this season.
- Kale Gaither, Union County – One of the top scoring sophomores in Kentucky, Gaither would benefit from a big 16u AAU season after primarily riding the bench with EG10 last season. Kale is undersized but is an excellent slasher and can get to the rim about whenever he wants. The biggest area for growth with Gaither’s game is his outside shooting. Kale shot 30.9% from 3 as a Sophomore but his stock will rise if he can shoot closer to 40% from three next year.
- Devin Perry, Central – One of the highest risers in our update, Devin is a floor general with a high basketball IQ. Perry won’t wow anyone with athleticism but he knows how to run a team and can change speeds with his dribble like many his age can’t. Devin lacks ideal size for the position as a college prospect but is best suited as a facilitator who can also create for others as well as himself.
- Wade Pelfrey, Hazard – Wade is a scoring point guard who is better as a slasher than he is as a shooter right now. Pelfrey’s shooting percentages of 46/37/66 are good for a sophomore but he needs to move closer to the 50/40/90 club next season. Hazard had a great season, narrowly missing the Sweet Sixteen. Wade’s abilities as a scoring point guard and alpha on his team helped to push them to the brink of winning the region and will likely be favored to get there next season.
