There are multiple prospects who project to the D1 level in college and some players with the potential to reach that level over the next two seasons. Here’s a break down of the top shooting guards and combo guards in the 2021 class.
- Isaiah Mason Isaiah Mason 6'4" | SF Bowling Green | 2021 State KY , Bowling Green – Mason made huge strides this season as a prospect. We had previously labeled him as a small forward but this season Isaiah showed that he can handle and shoot it well enough to be recruited as a shooting guard moving forward. If Mason were to grow a couple of more inches and continue improving his skill level, he could become a mid major D1 or higher prospect as he’s already showing the ability to score and defend at a high level.
- Ben Johnson Ben Johnson 6'3" | CG Lexington Catholic | 2021 State KY , Lexington Catholic – The youngest of three boys, Johnson has high expectations put on him as the younger brother to two D1 players. So far, Ben has proved more than up to the challenge. Having to be the go to scorer for Lexington Catholic this season, Ben is on track to be a 2,000 point scorer before graduation and the best of the Johnson boys. The key for Ben moving forward is to show he is better than being a catch and shoot player and improving lateral quickness to guard his position at the next level.
- Kelly Niece Kelly Niece 6'2" | CG Simon Kenton | 2021 State KY , Simon Kenton – Possibly the best pure scorer in the class, Niece averaged 23 points per game with 52/46/81 shooting splits as a Sophomore. Kelly isn’t especially athletic or explosive but he is highly skilled and thrives in a wide open offensive system where he plays with the ball in his hands a lot. Still a little unsure of his ceiling as a prospect but a big summer with Indiana Elite could land Kelly multiple college offers and a big move up the rankings.
- DaShawn Jackson DaShawn Jackson 6'3" | SG Frederick Douglass | 2021 State KY , Frederick Douglass – DaShawn is one of the tougher evaluations in this group. Every time I see him live, I love his scoring ability and fearlessness but when you look at the statistics, Jackson looks like a shooting guard who can’t shoot. Shooting 39% from the field and 29% from three doesn’t inspire confidence but that could be the result of having to carry a Douglass team in only it’s second year of existence. This AAU season is going to be a big one for DaShawn.
- JaQuais Franklin JaQuais Franklin 6'1" | PG Elizabethtown | 2021 State KY , Elizabethtown – A two sport star for the Panthers, Franklin is a good athlete who thrives when attacking the rim. JaQuais is also capable of knocking down open 3s as he shot 38% from three on the season and should thrive with more talent around him in AAU than what he sees on a nightly basis for E-Town. Franklin could wind up playing football or basketball at the next level as he is a skilled defensive back as well.
