The group of combo guards and shooting guards is one of the best position groups in the class, possibly the top overall. Here’s a look at the guards in the Junior rankings.
- Justin Powell, North Oldham – One of the biggest recruits in the state, Justin can play either guard spot but his future is likely as a shooting guard. He can really shoot the ball and doesn’t get credit for being as good of an athlete as he is. After only playing 4 games at Montverde, he returns to Kentucky and is primed for a big AAU season on the EYBL with Indy Heat.
- Marques Warrick, Henry Clay – One of the best scorers in the city of Lexington over the past few seasons, Warrick could be moved on the ball as a Senior. Right now, he’s a volume scorer that can heat up quickly. As he continues to tighten his handle and get stronger, Ques should be on the radar for mid major programs this season with Manimal Elite.
- Marcellus Vail, Collins – Vail is two different players depending on when you see him. In high school he’s more of a catch and shoot player who thrives off of teammates driving and kicking. In AAU, he’s a hyper aggressive scorer who attacks the rim first and wants to try to dunk everything. Either way, Vail is going to find his way to the next level as a scoring guard.
- Luke Morrison, South Oldham – One of the best shooters in the state, Luke could probably be considered a small forward at this point. He’s grown to 6’5 and is comfortable playing inside or out. Mid major D1 and better schools need to be watching him in the spring and summer. With his shooting ability, high IQ and sneaky athleticism, Luke can fill it up in a hurry and will need to prove he can guard to get those offers rolling in.
- Cody Potter, Shelby Valley – Potter put on a show at the All A State tournament in Richmond this season. Putting together a terrific season of 22 points and 10 rebounds per game with shooting splits of 49/42/85, Cody showed he can be a big time scorer. His ceiling as a prospect for the next level is going to depend on his foot speed and ability to guard his position at the next level.
Other Names to Know:
- Reese Smith, Boyle County – Three sport star has committed to play football for West Virginia in college.
- Trey Minter, Butler – When he’s hot, he can scorch the nets. He gets more consistent, he could be 6th region POY next season.
- Jalen Scott, Conner – One of the best players in NKY that never gets talked about, Scott is a lights out shooter.
- Trevon Harris, John Hardin – Do it all guard for the Bulldogs can score, rebound, defend and pass a high level.
- Kaelin Drakeford, Mercer County – Two sport star is an excellent rebounder and capable scorer.
