Continue ReadingOhio’s class of 2020 might be down, both in terms of depth and high-end talent. That doesn’t mean, though, that Northeast Ohio is affected by the off-year. At least eight players will be recruited at the Division I level and, heck, even outside the Top 20 we wouldn’t be surprised if several guys play on scholarship.
John Hugley | 6-9 C | Brush
Hugley holds offers from Pittsburgh, Nebraska, Penn State, Toledo, Xavier, Dayton, James Madison, Wright State, Duquesne, Saint Louis, Bowling Green, Robert Morris, Tuland, Cleveland State, Miami (OH), Akron, Buffalo, and Kent State, according to Verbal Commits. He continues to become more polished inside.
Devontae Blanton | 6-6 SF | St. Edward
Blanton is the top-ranked wing in the 2020 class. He has a thick build and ability to score it in a number of ways. Strong enough to go inside for physical and-ones and rebounds. Yet, Blanton has also become a knock-down shooter from the outside. Good rhythm on his pull-up. Very good decision-maker, too.
Garvin Clarke | 6-0 PG | Euclid
Clarke has the mental side of the game down. He sees the floor excellently and makes on-time passes to open teammates. Deadly shot-creator in the pick-and-roll. Gets to his spots offensively because of his quickness and ball-handling ability. While the jumper could be a bit more consistent, it’s no longer a question mark. Ambidextrous finisher who can elevate.
Luka Eller | 6-8 PF | Lake Catholic
Eller is a very intriguing 4 who can both space the floor or score it inside on a post touch. Although Eller isn’t very thick, he’s stronger than he looks and is able to rebound quite well. Able to drive to the basket off the bounce and finish in traffic. Eller uses his length to defend on the perimeter.
Luke Frazier | 6-3 SG | Lake Catholic
Frazier is a talented shot-creator with a dynamic handle and effective pull-up jumper. He can play either guard spot and has the explosiveness and athleticism to play the 2-guard. Several MAC offers have come in over the past 12 months. Very good at creating separation.
Grant Huffman | 6-4 G | St. Edward
Huffman is a very intelligent combo guard that can make plays and get to the rim. Finishes in traffic with elusiveness and athleticism. Uses the backboard in traffic. Wide defensive stance and good lateral quickness. His shooting ability has gone up and down but it looked pretty good last week at the State Tournament.
Montorie Foster | 6-1 PG | St. Edward
Foster brings energy, unselfishness, and profound quickness to the game as a point guard. Doesn’t need the ball to make his presence known in a game. Moves without the ball extremely well and has an uncanny ability to crash the offensive glass for a 6-foot-1 point guard. Plays with confidence and a fearless mentality.
Andy Barba | 6-6 SF | Benedictine
Barba is either a 3 or a stretch 4, but it really doesn’t — he can flat-out play. Shoots the ball very well when he’s trailing the play and has become a stronger rebounder. Finishes very well in transition, where he can use his size and athleticism in the open floor. Unselfish player who makes quick reads in the half-court. Defends multiple positions.
Nehemiah Benson | 6-6 PF | Lutheran East
Benson combines a strong frame with long arms and a budding skill-set. He can score it from distance, smoothly pull-up, or take it into the post and score over the top. Benson doesn’t have a glaring weakness and will be a prioritized D-II recruit if Division Is don’t go after him this spring and summer.
Carson Ryan | 6-4 G | Struthers
Ryan is a well-rounded combo guard with an athletic build and the ability to get to the basket. Finishes through contact and rebounds well for a guard. Skilled ball-handler than can make plays for others or score it off the bounce.
Luke Howes | 6-0 PG | Fairview
Howes is a playmaker on one end, a disruptive force who causes turnovers on the other. Creative passer and scorer in the lane. Uses his thick frame around the basket and to make opposing ball-handlers uncomfortable. Capable outside shooter. Takes chances in passing lanes. True floor general.
Dominick Moegerle | 6-4 SF | Hoban
A special athlete with electric finishing ability, Moegerle will be a big-time recruit as he continues to add ball skills. He can defend multiple positions with his solid frame and quickness. Gets to the basket in a hurry when he finds daylight, but doesn’t create his own shot unless he’s able to get out in transition.
Deshaun Nettles | 6-7 PF | Cleveland Central Catholic
Nettles is a fluid 6-foot-7 kid with fluidity that shows flashes of intriguing skill. He is comfortable putting it on the floor in the halfcourt or pushing off the defensive glass. Quick enough to defend the wing with size. Consistently scoring from the outside or taking advantage of his size in the post will be key.
Luke Floriea | 5-10 PG | Mentor
Floriea is the second-highest rated new addition to this installment of the rankings. His speed, outside shooting, and playmaking ability in the lane are all very impressive. The backcourt of Floriea and sophomore Luke Chicone give the Cardinals State Championship aspirations next season.
Gbolahan Adio | 6-3 SF | Richmond Heights
A long athletic wing who can score it and defend, Adio really started to put it all together in his junior season. Great decision-maker, especially in transition. Equally capable of finishing at the cup or hitting outside shots. Adio should have the attention of Division II programs recruiting Ohio this summer.
Jagger Haynes | 6-6 PF | Massillon Perry
Haynes is a lean forward who provides energy on the glass and playmaking out of the post. Surveys the floor out of the post and finds open teammates to dish it to. Pretty skilled. Capable shooter. Plays stronger than his frame might suggest.
Dakota Cochran | 6-2 SG | Shaker Heights
Cochran is a strong wing-guard who attacks the rim with power and brings an element of toughness to the game that some opponents simply can’t deal with — Cochran is a dog. Not only does he intimidate, rebound like crazy, and finish strong, he also has skill. Capable secondary ball-handler. Outside shoooting is a strength of his, too.
Quentin Richardson | 5-11 PG | Holy Name
Richardson can really determine the flow of a game with his speed and ability to push pace. Makes good decisions at full-speed when he’s going coast-to-coast. Keeps his dribble alive in traffic and makes clever passes to shooters while in the lane. Shoots it well but is more of a playmaker for others. Quick, slim athlete.
Kade Ruegsegger | 6-3 SG | Dover
A long and thin wing, Ruegsegger can really fill it up from the outside. Finds clever ways to find shots without the ball by re-positioning himself around the arch. Wide defensive stance, which capitalizes on his length. In general, Ruegsegger plays to his strengths.
Anthony Maxie | 6-4 C | Richmond Heights
Maxie is an athletic rim protector who jumps high and quickly. Sets screens with purpose and is dangerous diving to the rim. Maxie can also run the floor well and has shown flashes of scoring off the dribble-drive when lanes open up.
