With that in mind, high school players who develop an all-around game, grasping every facet of their skill set, will be the most successful at the next level and will not be left without a chair when recruiting ends. These were the most versatile players at the 2019 OSSAA 2A State Tournament last weekend in Oklahoma City:
Cooper Fuksa 2019 Hennessey forward
Cooper Fuksa was hitting 3-pointers, posting up, defending opposing bigs, and grabbing rebounds. Rebounding was big in Hennessey’s first-round win against Vanoss, and Fuska was one of the guys doing a lot of the clean-up work to make it possible for the Eagles. He also finished with 13 points in the first-round win, hitting a pair of 3s and going perfect from the free throw line.
Tate Cathcart 2019 Hooker wing
Tate Cathcart can hit the long-ball out of the dribble, flash in the post, drive-and-kick, or pretty much whatever he needs to do on the offensive side of the floor. Cathcart rings in at 6-foot-2-inches, but he plays larger than his listed height. Cathcart brought a lot of energy to the floor when he led Hooker in scoring with 25 points in the Bulldogs’ first-round exit to Rock Creek. Though his team fell short, he made his presence felt all over the floor.
Reece Hamar 2019 Rejoice Christian forward/wing
Reece Hamar was rebounding the ball; handling the ball and scoring the ball. In Rejoice Christian’s Gold Ball performance last weekend, Hamar was an integral piece in the Eagles’ game. He most notably scored 23 points off of six 3-pointers in the first round against the Dale Pirates to lead Rejoice to a win and keep momentum rolling for the Eagles.
Jaden Lietzke 2020 Rejoice Christian forward
An assertive weapon for the Eagles, the 6-foot-6-inch center wasn’t just a down-ball guy awaiting a falling board or a lofty pass to make a move. He was a great off-ball guy, could split out to the wing and set screens from the high post and played well out of the pick-and-roll.
Dayken Rackley 2019 Minco forward
Rackley is a rarely-mobile post that can handle the ball, create his own shot, and is a smooth finisher from any place on the floor. Rackley was also exceptional when moving the ball both out of the post and at the wing.
Justin Seay 2019 Rejoice Christian forward
You don’t earn the State Tournament MVP without stealer play, and that is exactly what the championship-winning Eagles received from their senior. Seay was especially interesting for his ability to pass the ball out of the post and rack up assists on top of his 16 points a game.
Aaron Taylor 2019 Rock Creek forward
Aaron Taylor is a special player with a very interesting future as his recruiting opens up. His brand developed over the weekend as his stock rose thanks to his performances. Speaking with a former college forward who watched Taylor play over the weekend, one thing that was made apparent about Taylor’s skill set is that he has a rare post game at the 2A high school level. He is a heady passer, can put the ball on the floor, and is a good shot-selector.
