1A Regionals: How That Broke Down
Of all of the Regionals by class, 1A was the one that went half as much as expected. With the one exception being Morristown falling as early as they did but Bloomfield making it through was not a surprise. At the top of the bracket, we saw Blackhawk Christian take down a very tough 21st Century team and then walk through Argos. Central Catholic will meet them next week after they beat Randolph Southern and North Vermillion with ease in both games.
On the Southside of the bracket, Barr-Reeve had the scare of the day as Evansville Day proved to be worthy and had them on the ropes all game until the final quarter when Barr-Reeve roared back. Then, they dismantled Lanesville that night to move to Saturday at Semistate. They take on Bloomfield who was able to get past a difficult Metropolitan team and then Greenwood Christian who pulled off an upset of Morristown, last year’s 1A State Champion.
1A Semistate: What To Watch For
Blackhawk Christian vs. Central Catholic – 4:00 PM ET @ Elkhart
This game should be a yearly matchup during the regular season as they matchup on so many levels. A small 1A, religious-based program from Fort Wayne vs. a small 1A religious-based program from Lafayette. They are both powerhouses that haven’t met since 2002-03 when they met in Semistate watching Central Catholic win that night and again for a State Championship.
Blackhawk Christian is the better team in terms of talent but Central Catholic has won so often that you can’t count them out in any game. These two teams have tested themselves all year long playing big school teams so they are as prepared as any team in the state expect maybe MIC teams. But, Blackhawk owns the size advantage with Caleb Furst in the paint and has the best offense in the state, averaging 80.14 points per game. This might be the toughest test of the year for either team. The possible Frankie Davidson vs. Carson Barrett matchup would be very fun to watch.
Bloomfield vs. Barr-Reeve – 4:00 PM ET @ Washington
The last game of the regular season previewed this game as Barr-Reeve knocked off Bloomfield, 42-34. But since then, Bloomfield has won 5 games in a row to get to Semistate and has seen their offense step up a bit. But this will obviously be their toughest test as they try to even the season series and make their way to state. Barr-Reeve is the team more often talked about and for good reason. They were just here at this game a year ago before losing to Morristown. They also won a state title in 2014 and have been to the state title game 5 times since 2000.
But, this matchup will be more interesting as Barr-Reeve and Bloomfield know each other so well and Barr-Reeve is under a new head coach in Josh Thompson that in 10 seasons hasn’t made it past Regionals before. He’s been pretty good this year but in some ways, Bloomfield has a little more experience. But, Barr-Reeve’s 8-point win just three weeks ago is not something that should be ignored. While only 8 points, Bloomfield is going to have to have their offense flowing because they aren’t necessarily a massive offense.
