Continue ReadingSenior night is always an emotional one and Woodburn used it to their advantage on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs used emotion to fuel a shutout of Philomath in the third quarter and held on to the lead to earn a 52-40 victory at home going into the post-season.
It looked early as if Woodburn would win going away as they started off on fire from three-point range and led 12-0 before Philomath could seemingly blink. But the Warriors slowly crept into the game and tied it up at the half. Woodburn came out again after the break ablaze and ended up holding Philomath to zero points in the third quarter, and then turned up the offense in the fourth to win going away.
“The focus on senior night is always about the seniors and for us it’s always been about the defensive side and we make sure we play tough defense and the offense will come from that,” said Woodburn head coach Raul Veliz. “That’s what you saw in the third quarter – our defense really stepped up.
Here’s a look at the top performers on the night:
RJ Veliz (2019 Woodburn) – Veliz surpassed the 2,000 career point mark recently and he added on to his total with 23 points as he continues to move up the all-time scoring list in state history. The senior guard didn’t force the action but instead took what the defense gave him, sinking four threes while also dishing out four assists and grabbing seven rebounds and rejecting two shots in a nice all-around performance. Veliz continues to get recruited by numerous schools at the D-II, D-III, and NAIA levels and will be taking his first official visit this weekend to the Academy of Art in San Francisco.
Trevor Karsseboom (2019 Woodburn) – The 5-foot-10 senior is built like a tank and he played like one on Tuesday night, taking the ball strong to the hole, hitting the boards hard (seven boards) and also playing some intense on-the-ball defense. Karsseboom also made the right pass in dishing out five assists.
Tyson Doman (2019 Woodburn) – The 6-foot-4 senior is lean and plays more of a finesse game, but that worked out well against Philomath. He found his spots largely on the baseline and sank some smooth perimeter jumpers and finished with 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting including a three.
Marshall Brattain (2019 Philomath) – Brattain is undersized as a 6-foot-3 post, but he’s burley and aggressive which made him tough to guard down low. The senior showed off a variety of post moves and he wasn’t afraid to take the ball up strong. He ended up with a team-high 16 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field.
Calvin Snuggerud (2019 Philomath) – Snuggerud is an aggressive left-handed guard who does well taking it ball to the basket and finding ways to finish. He struggled to hit from the perimeter but ended up with eight points on 4-for-12 shooting while dishing out three assists.
