As the postseason draws nearer and nearer, it’s about time to start looking at some of the notable stock risers this winter.
This list includes upperclassmen in the Wichita area and is most certainly not a comprehensive list but definitely players who have raised their stock.
Izaiah Hale (2019) – Wichita Heights High School
Izaiah is one of the more underrated guards in the area and has been the past few years.
He takes commands of the Heights offense and is the a good floor general and commander of the offense. He uses his good feel for the game and skill to protect the ball and make sound decisions.
His focus is not to stuff the stat sheet with points but do what is right for the team, which at time means he will take control and be a scoring guard. That is something he is very capable of.
Cade Howard (2019) – Campus High School
The 6’7” big man for Campus is having a solid season on a star-studded roster.
Cade is very disruptive at the rim, serving as a good rim protector for Campus and changing shots in the paint frequently. His length helps him rebound the ball as well.
Offensively, Cade is best in the mid-post area where he can turn and face his defender and has success in one or two dribbles going towards the basket.
Baron Biermann (2020) – Andale High School
Baron is a knock-down shooter who is a good complement to Easton Hunter for the Andale squad and can put up points in a hurry.
Although he is a smaller guard at 5’10”, he is an active defender, especially on the top of that zone that Andale will run and is great at pressuring the ball without fouling.
Off the ball, he will shoot the gap for steals and convert in transition.
Tai Johnson (2020) – Maize South High School
Tai is a big part in the success at Maize South this year as they are poised for a deep run in the postseason. His ability to guard on the perimeter and get to the basket make him and Trey Reid a lot to handle.
Tai is having some success either finishing in the paint or getting to the line as he’s displaying above average quickness.
Tyler Kahmann (2019) – Campus High School
Tyler is a natural scorer and has a good feel for the game which allows him to score in rhythm and often for Campus.
He has a lot of varsity playing experience and is an anchor for the Campus team.
Tyler is committed to Emporia State University to play football but who knows, maybe we could see him on the basketball court there in his college career as well as he is a talented multi-sport athlete.
Drew Ellis (2019) – Mulvane High School
Another talented football standout at WR, Drew Ellis is a standout in multiple sports.
This winter he broke a 63-year basketball career scoring record at Mulvane High School that has stood for 56 years.
His quickness and burst make him almost impossible to stay in front of and he plays at a next-level speed. He is a smaller guard but makes up for that with his ability to create off the dribble.
Devon Koehn (2019) – Maize High School
Devon is one of the best available forwards still left in the state as he was admittedly snubbed from my article of top available forwards/bigs over 6’5”. My apologies Devon.
The 6’7” forward can step out to the midrange or three-point area and be successful and isn’t afraid to drive to the hoop, able to get the step on larger, less mobile bigs.
He’s able to play on the low block, be a presence on defense, and control the board well also.
Jordan Millspaugh (2019) – Sunrise Christian PGB
Jordan is originally from Dallas, Texas and is attending Sunrise for his postgrad year. He has added strength and toughness through the season as well as seeing the game better as he has seen plenty of action versus junior colleges.
The 6’5” guard can handle the ball in the open court very well, make good decisions, and is an underrated passer. At Covenant Christian in Texas, he was a dangerous scorer, doing it from all three-levels which is what he will bring to a four-year school next year.
Defensively, he boasts a wingspan that is nearly 6’10” which readily takes away passing lanes and disrupts offensive players all over the court.
