The Greater Spokane League (GSL) and Mid Columbia Conference (MCC) makes up District 8 in the 4A and 3A classifications. February is always an exciting time, as we get to see who will move onto the regional playoff round and earn bragging rights to the crown of Eastern Washington. Let’s break down how things went at the 4A and 3A levels.
4A:
GSL: 5-3
MCC: 3-5
Champion: Gonzaga Prep (GSL)
The GSL performed better across the board and crowned the District 8 Champion with Gonzaga Prep taking home Eastern Washington’s crown in a 17 point win over Richland of the MCC. Ferris had two of the losses for GSL and Central Valley had a tough loss to Richland. 5 of the 8 games between the two conferences has resulted in wins for the Spokane teams. One game still remains to be played between Chiawana (MCC) and Central Valley (GSL). The loser will go home and the winner moves onto the regional round. One player to keep an eye on for Chiawana is 2021 6’5 G Kobe Young.
3A:
GSL: 2-1
MCC: 1-2
Champion: Mt. Spokane (GSL)
The 3A District 8 is smaller and less games have been played between the two conferences, but one thing is for sure and that is Mt. Spokane is the best 3A team in Eastern Washington. In the District final, Mt. Spokane defeated Kennewick (MCC) 70-32. 2021 6’7 W Tyson Degenhart scored 18 points, while 2019 6’3 G Jerry Twenge chipped in 15. For the second bid into regionals, Kennewick will play the winner of Hermiston and Shadle Park (GSL). Those two games will be played on the same day! The girls District 8 will also be doing the same. It is the first time I have ever heard of a team playing two games in a single day. Thanks, snow!
