With that being said, we take a look back at what freshman made some noise on varsity this season. Most freshman do not come in impacting the high school game on the varsity level right away but these few freshman did just that just a little this year. Mind you these are not all of the freshman in the state of Georgia who have impacted their varsity squads, but these names have been around all season long so let us take a look.
PG Dillon Hunter (Westlake High School)
The 6-foot-3 point guard Dillion Hunter came into this season already being known as a high major prospect. Hunter is currently one of the top freshman in the country, and before the season, he was invited to the USA mini camp back in October in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The freshman point guard did more than just impact his varisty squad in his first year in high school, he was named the starting point guard for Westlake High School from day one. Playing alongside his brother, Clemson commit Chase Hunter, kind of made things easier for Dillion coming in. He already seems to have the physical built and size for a freshman at the point guard position. Hunter holds good vision and has the capablity to make a play in the open court. SG Robert Cowherd (Holy Spirit Prep) pictured above
Robert Cowherd is certainly a name to remember here in the peach state. The 6-foot-4 two-guard has made a decent name for himself this year besides playing behind one of the nations most exciting players in 2019 SG Anthony “Ant-Man” Edwards. Cowherd did not have a lot of responsibility this season obviously but he showed he can be a supreme threat from the perimeter and beyond the arc. He is a solid shot maker so far into his high school career and has a very nice release on his jump shot. He has a solid body for a freshman but he will definitely have to get stronger as he goes. With Edwards in his last season in the high school game, expect Robert to show up and play big minutes next season for Holy Spirit Prep. AAU Team: Georgia Stars Nike EYBL
PG Ashton Malone (Grayson High School)
The floor general Ashton Malone has received very good minutes this year on one of the states best teams in Grayson High School. Malone, before the season, reclassifed to the 2022 class and chose Grayson to begin his high school career. Sitting at 6-foot-1, Malone already passes the eye test on his physical built and size as a freshman so far. Playing behind one of the southeast’s emerging prosepcts in 2020 PG Deivon Smith, Ashton is certainly learning the definition of hard work and dedication to getting better. He is not an elite floor general just yet but he is able to control and run the offense when he is on the floor. Ashton can penetrate the lane and get to the rim to suck the defense in and once that happens he is capable of finding his open teammates. AAU Team: Athletes of Tomorrow (GA) Nike EYBL
SG Jalen Carruth (Lincoln Academy)
Jalen Carruth of Lincoln Academy has been another freshman that stoodout this year in his first year in high school. Carruth sits at 6-foot-5 with a slim frame and somewhat long arms. He has been a knockdown shooter for the Bulldogs all season long and efficient offensivley. Jalen still has work to do of course as a freshman, but has improved throughout the year according to his head coach. He has plenty of upside and this summer will be big for the young guard going into his sophomore campaign next year. AAU Team: To Be Determined
PG Zocko Littleton Jr. (South Cobb High School)
Zocko Littleton Jr. certainly burst onto the scene this year in the peach state with his efficiency with South Cobb High School. The 6-foot-0 point guard was already coming off a quality summer and bought his excellent floor play into the high school season. He can score from all three levels and has a great jumper from beyond the arc and the mid range areas. Littleton Jr. can get hot in a blink of an eye if you allow him. He has a solid handle and with his IQ you would not even think he is a freshman. AAU Team: Georgia Hurricanes
