However once play began, both teams came ready to play and compete with west Columbus taking the early lead. East Carteret would make a few runs but the 2nd half was ultimately controlled by West Columbus as they got the win and opportunity to advance.
West Columbus 2021 F/C Brandis Kelly: If there was a player of the game award, it would have to go to this young man as he was dominant pretty much all game long. He blocked shots, rebounded, finished inside and outside the paint, as well as showing his quite impressive passing ability. It’s rare that you see a big man with his size, strength, agility and versatility at such a young age, finished with 15 points, 10 Rebounds, 6 Assist.
West Columbus 2020 Guard Tayvon Tyler: There are certain players that seem to make the right play at the right time, and Tayvon was that guy for his squad. Whenever East Carteret would go on a run, he would knock down a jump shot or make a play to put a stop to the run. One of the more impressive attributes that we saw from him was on the defensive end, he played intense defense without fouling and forced turnovers.
West Columbus HS 2019 Guard Shawn Tyson: His contribution to the team cannot be measured by his stat line, he brings a good amount of energy, effort and leadership that you have to love. His constant communication with teammates is something that you want from your senior guard in the playoffs.
West Columbus HS 2020 Guard Ty’Quawn Johnson: Plays the game at an up-tempo manner, he puts pressure on his opponent which causes turnovers which turns into quick transition buckets. He didn’t have monster numbers but they were solid as he finished with 12 Points, 3 Assist and 2 rebounds on the night.
East Carteret HS 2021 Guard Bennie Brooks: He has put up some big time numbers for his squad this season and it was clear early on the game plan to not let him score. He had to work for every single basket which took a toll on him as you could see fatigue set in late, he finished with 14 points.
East Carteret HS 2021 Guard Caleb Hymon: The lefty guard was a bright spot for his team in the 2nd half as he provided a nice amount of points and assist. We saw some flashes of potential with a few finishes he had in traffic as well as some passes to teammates and how well he handled defensive pressure, he finished with 15 points on the night.
East Carteret HS 2021 Guard Qualik Nolan: In the 3rd quarter when his team struggled to score the ball, he stepped up and provided some offense. Scoring all 11 of his points in that quarter while team combined for 17, you can see why his offense was so important for EC at that time.
