Continue ReadingIt was an action packed three days of basketball beginning from Saturday until Monday night as the WCAC playoffs were in full effect. We saw one of the more shocking upsets in the whole season as the number 5 seed beat the number 1 seed in the semifinals but in the end it was the hottest team of the past month taking home the crowd. Here are 6 takeaways I have from the event.
St. John’s Begins Quest By Beating O’Connell
St. John’s got off to a great start in the WCAC tournament by knocking off the 4 seed Bishop O’Connell. These teams split in the regular season but it was the Cadets that got a big win in the rubber game. 2020 Ishmael Leggett led the way with 21 points followed by 2019 Casey Morsell finishing with 20.
Ireton Gives PVI All They Can Handle
For about 2 minutes we thought maybe we could see one of the biggest upsets all year in the 7 seed Bishop Ireton upsetting the 2 seed Paul VI. However, WCAC Player Of The Year, Trevor Keels was not going to let that happen as he tallied 29 points helping his team win 66-54. Credit to Ireton as they fought till the end as it was 2020 James Berry leading the way for Ireton with 19 points.
Gonzaga Wins Rubber Game Against McNamara
Gonzaga started their WCAC championship run with a beat down on Bishop McNamara in which was ultimately the rummer game as these two teams split in the regular season. 2019 unsigned senior Anwar Gill led the way with 22 which helped Steve Turners bunch win with a final score of 84-43.
St. John’s Shocks DeMatha
Call this the upset of the year as the 5 seed, St. John’s College High School Cadets, SHOCKED the number 1 seed and regular season champion, DeMatha Stags in the WCAC semifinals. 2019 Casey Morsell finished with 16 in this one and had the game winning block on Justin Moore to help prevail the Cadets to the WCAC finals.
Gonzaga Comes Back From Double Digits To Beat PVI
There is a famous saying that “it is always hard to beat a certain team three times in a year” and unfortunately for the Panthers of Paul VI, that saying was true. However, it did not look like this was going to be the case as the Panthers were up 35-22 at halftime, but it was Gonzaga that outscored PVI 41-20 in the second half and won by a final score of 63-55. 2020 Chuck Harris stepped up huge in the second half and led the way with 16 for the Eagles.
Gonzaga Wins The WCAC Championship
With all of that being said, it was the 5 seed St. John’s vs the 3 seed Gonzaga in the WCAC championship game. St. John’s had one lead of 9-7 in the 1st quarter but after that it was all Gonzaga. I predicted Gonzaga last week to win the WCAC tournament simply because I thought they were playing the best ball at the right time of year. Everyone on the floor knew what role they had to play in order to win the big game and they executed it perfectly. This Gonzaga team flew under the radar for most of the year and I know that is how Steve Turner wanted it to be. When the moment mattered the most, everyone on his team played their role which helped Gonzaga win the 2019 WCAC Championship with a final score of 60-56.
