Continue ReadingWith this being the last week of basketball we are looking at the candidates that have played at a level that garners them Mr. Basketball considerations. Although there are a few players that have had excellent careers these are the players that have had an exceptional 2018-2019 year. We recently ran a poll with a few players and it helped us condense this list. Since 1987 there has only been one 1st round pick that was a Mr. Basketball (1989) winner and that was Shawn Bradley of Emery High School in 1993. Only two players have won it twice and that’s Jeff Johnsen (95-96) and Tyler Haws (08-09).
The 5 players we have come up with have been durable and have excelled this year. There are a lot of good players in the state that didn’t make the list.
These are the last 10 winners of the Mr. Basketball award in Utah:
2008 & 2009 *Tyler Haws – Lone Peak: Brigham Young University (Levitec Huesca: Spain)
2010 *Kyle Collinsworth – Provo: Brigham Young University (905 Raptors: G-League)
2011 *Tyrell Corbin – West: UC Davis, SLCC, Cal State University Bakersfield (Stockton, Kings: G-League)
2012 *Jordan Loveridge – West Jordan: Utah (Krosno: Poland)
2013 **Nick Emery – Lone Peak: Brigham Young University
2014 **T.J Haws – Lone Peak: Brigham Young University
2015 **Jesse Wade – Davis: Gonzaga, Brigham Young University
2016 *Frank Jackson – Lone Peak: Duke (2017 NBA 2nd Round: New Orleans Pelicans)

The Candidates
1.6’0 PG Rylan Jones – Olympus HIgh School
20 PPG, 7 RPG, 8 APG and 3 SPG
The University of Utah signee has been one of the steadiest PG we have seen in a long time. He can control the tempo better than most college floor generals. His IQ is off the charts. Rylan has had a fantastic career but this season he is putting up amazing numbers and has his team ready to defend their title as he looks to repeat as a State Champion and as Mr. Basketball.
2.6’7 W/F Dyson Koehler – Jordan High School
23 PPG and 7 RPG
The Class of 2020 prospect is showing why he is one of the best most versatile players in the state. His two game winners against Corner Canyon leave you in awe. Jordan is a great team but Dyson makes the team a true 5A contender as he makes his teammates better with his elevated play.
3.6’2 G Casey Brown – Pleasant Grove
17 PPG, 6 RPG, 4 APG and 2 SPG
When you think of Pleasant Grove you often think of their tallest player but Casey Brown is as a complete of a player that we have in the state. PG is currently ranked in the Frontier Section of this weeks USA Today Poll at # 6. Casey lit up on of the top teams in California (Sierra Canyon) for 18 in a tournament in Hawaii. He has signed to play at BYU.
4.6’4 SG Jeremy Dowdell – Olympus
30 PPG and 5 RPG
Jeremy is having one of the best offensive season we have seen in a long time. He has broken records and remains as one of the top unsigned seniors in the country. He is averaging 5 three-pointers a game. To make things easier for him in a way, he plays with the best PG in the state.
5.6’7 F Trevon Allfrey – Copper Hills
20 PPG, 9 RPG and 2 APG
Trevon has been playing quality basketball for a long time now. It almost feels as though he is a 5th year senior as he plays with poise and composer. He is a big reason Copper Hills is one of those teams that can knock off the powerhouse Region 4 teams. He can score inside and out. Hes had some impressive dunks this year.
Honorable Mention:
Trey Stewart – American Fork
Matt Van Komen – Pleasant Grove
Isacc Johnson – American Fork
Majok Kuath – Kearns
Nate Hansen – Timpview
