Patrick Sullivan, a 6-foot-5 forward for McGuinness, has been the premier scoring option for the Irish in his senior season from the five-spot. However, I see him being more of a stretch-three at the next level. He has a smooth, consistent mid-range jumper, but also has great post moves that reflect his craftiness and footwork.
I believe that with training, the mechanics are already in place to allow Sullivan to develop an outside stroke. Not many guys at this level can create their own shot from the high post with the accuracy and attentiveness as Sullivan. Beyond that, it just takes the extension of his range to create a shot from the outside-in.
Furthermore, He isn’t the type of player to throw up meaningless shots, but is really a careful shot-selector and doesn’t hesitate to give the ball up if he knows he could be swallowed.
Head Coach Scott Raper informed me over the weekend that Sullivan has not only been the center-piece to McGuinness’s floor production this year, but has been a leader in the weight room as well.
“(Patrick) made guys that weren’t taking weight serious, take it serious,” said Raper. Raper said that each McGuinness player has increased their respective maxes across four lifts over 160 pounds, on average.
Sullivan is a former football standout for McGuinness who made the decision in his junior year to direct his focus on the hardwood. Raper said that Sulivan’s leadership has been a focal point in McGuinness tripling its win total from 2018 to 2019. Despite his high school career effectively ending with a loss in the Regional consolation bracket, I believe Sullivan has not seen his last minutes on the floor. Furthermore, I think he can benefit any program he steps into.
Sullivan is a player I would advise to any program looking to build its culture with a guy who works hard in the gym, shoots the ball well and makes well-advised decisions with the ball in his hand.
