The Week Ahead: District Championship Week
We’ve reached postseason! This 2018-19 season seems to have flown by! By the end of this week, half the teams in the state will be eliminated and see their seasons end while 128 programs will advance to the regional tournament. Here are some of the best semifinal games of the week along with the schedule for district championship games.
Monday, February 18
- Lyon County and Trigg County should be a good one in the 5th district. 7th grader Travis Perry is a star for the Lions while Kendric Adams is a double-double machine for Trigg.
- The 7th district semifinal of Hopkins County Central and Caldwell County features Tylan Mann going head to head with Derrin Boyd.
- The always entertaining 43rd district starts with Dunbar and Tates Creek in the 4/5 game. Tates Creek will look to continue a great season behind Amari Taylor while Dunbar will try to continue their momentum from their win over Scott County.
- Elliott County could be on upset alert in the 62nd district. They take on Morgan County. Coach Perry is likely to have a special gameplan for Korbin Spencer and the Lions.
Tuesday, February 19
- Webster County and Union County meet for the third time. Coach Newton should have his team ready but Union has beaten them twice this season. Sophomore Kale Gaither has had a strong season for the Braves.
- Christian County has had an underwhelming season but they can change that narrative real quick if they can upset rival Hopkinsville.
- Taylor County has had a great bounce back season after struggling in the 2017-18 campaign. They can get back to the regional tournament with a win over Campbellsville.
- Fern Creek and Bullitt East are two teams that are capable of making a run in the 6th region tournament but they play each other Tuesday night and only one can advance to the regional.
- North Oldham can ruin their rivals season by knocking off Oldham County in the 29th district semifinals.
- Grant County can shock the 8th region by knocking off Walton-Verona on Tuesday night in the 32nd district semifinals.
- The 40th district is very competitive and one of the best games of the night should be Montgomery County taking on Bourbon County.
- The 43rd district never disappoints and this year’s semifinal match-up of Lexington Christian against Lexington Catholic could be a classic after two close games in the regular season, both won by Catholic.
Wednesday, February 20
- Champions will be crowned in the following districts: 10, 47, 53, 61
- Daviess County will be upset minded when they play Owensboro Catholic in the 9th district.
- Greenwood will try to make a statement and knock off Warren Central. Central and Bowling Green have played for the region title for approximately 100 years straight and a Gator win would definitely shake up the 4th region.
- Central Hardin will be on upset alert against Elizabethtown as they make the trip to take on the Panthers.
- PRP and Valley go head to head in the 21st district and either Cam Wilson or Darius Osborne will see their high school career ended by Wednesday night.
- The 27th district is home to a heck of a game as Waggener and Seneca play. Seneca shocked Waggener last year to get to the 7th region tournament.
- Franklin County has lost two starters over the course of the season due to quitting and are tasked with beating a very good Frankfort team in the 41st district.
- Perhaps the best district in the state this season is the 45th. Wednesday night will see semifinals between Garrard County and Danville and Boyle County against Lincoln County.
Thursday, February 21
- Champions will be crowned in the following districts: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,13,14,15,16,23,24,25,26,32,33,35,36,37,39,40,46,48, 50,51,55,56,58,59,62,64
Friday, February 22
- The rest of the district champions will be crowned across the state: Districts 9,11,12,17,18,19,20,21,22,27,29,30,34,38,41,42,43,44,45,49,52,54,57,60,63
