Not only is the 6’6 wing the best scorer in 1A, but he finished the regular season as the best scorer in the state regardless of class. Twice he scored more than 50 points in a game this season, that is an extremely rare accomplishment. His crown jewel was a 76-point performance in January against East Buchanan, it was the second-most points ever scored in an Iowa high school basketball game. He’s just a junior, by the way.
2. Bryce Coppock (Newell-Fonda) — 29.8
Just a shade under 30 points per game, Coppock was painstakingly close to becoming just the fifth Iowa high school player in the last five years to average 30. Good news for Coppock, and for Newell-Fonda fans, he’s still got another season to light up the scoreboard.
3. Andrew Gibb (St. Edmond) — 29.1
One of the state’s best available prospects, Gibb has a big summer last year with All Iowa Attack, and followed that up with a very strong senior season at St. Edmond. He’s got some serious length, and as good as he is as a shooter, one of the state’s best, he’s worked to establish his slashing ability. Gibb shot 53 percent from the floor and 89 percent from the free-throw line this season.
4. JD Stout (Keota) — 28.4
Another underclassman to make this list, it’s chock-full of them, Stout’s season was always destined for great scoring; The second game of the season, he went for 40 points in a win over Lone Tree. It was his highest scoring total of the season. What’s most impressive about Stout’s scoring, is his incredibly efficient 54 percent from the floor and 45 percent from deep.
5. Trey Shearer (Montezuma) — 23.4
The youngest guy to make the list, Shearer followed up his eye-opening freshman season with a blistering sophomore campaign. What’s best about him, is that the scoring is just one of many very strong aspects of his skill-set. He finished the regular season averaging 4.7 points and 2.2 steals as well.
6. Codey Hicks (Janesville) — 22.9
The information you’re about to read is not a mistake: Codey Hicks shot 82 percent from the floor this season. Are you kidding me? Sometimes guys will shoot 82 percent in a single game, more seldom they’ll do it during the span of a week. Never does a guy shoot 82 percent for the season. The 6’6 big-man also averaged 10.3 rebounds and three blocks per game.
7. Tate Bear (Meskwaki) — 22.7
Meskwaki’s season came to an end last Thursday, but the early exit doesn’t take away from the sheer dominance this season from Bear. A 6’4 forward, the nearly-23 points per game came on 54 percent shooting. And he also ripped down a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game.
8. Donnie Weis (Stanton) — 22.7
Stanton only lost one game throughout the regular season, so — spoiler alert — it’s no coincidence that they are the only 1A team to feature two guys on this list. Weis was especially prolific from beyond the arc, he finished the regular season with 55 3s, and made them at a respectable 41 percent clip.
9. Nathan Keck (Kinglsey-Pierson) — 22.0
Scoring might not have even been his best asset this season. Keck strung together one of the finer all-around regular seasons, going for not only 22 points per game, but also 7.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.7 steals per game, all team-bests.
10. Drake Johnson (Stanton) — 21.9
The second Stanton guard to make the list, Johnson was not only a magnificent scorer for the Vikings, but the team’s best rebounder, too, with 9.1 per game. His shooting efficiency of 59 percent makes his 21.9 points per game shine even brighter.
