Smith has scored 1,772 points in his career up to tonight and could reach 2,000 career if he can lead the Cardinals on a postseason run. He recently eclipsed 500 career rebounds. Tre’ is headed to Tallahassee Community College for the next two seasons as he chases his dream of playing Division I basketball. Here’s what the 6’3 combo guard had to say as he reflected on his path to being a college basketball player.
- What’s your earliest basketball memory? When did you realize you had so much love for the game?
I fell in love with the game in kindergarten. You can ask anyone about me though, I wasn’t even good. I was terrible actually. Didn’t make an all star team until 4th grade. My other 3 best friends made it everywhere and I was always left out. But I loved it so I wasn’t going to quit. I just remember going into my 4th grade year that I was going to make the team & I didn’t want to be left out again. So I’ve always had love for it even when I wasn’t good at it.
- When did you think you were good enough to earn a college scholarship?
Sophomore year of high school. Trevon earned a scholarship offer from Morehead State during his 16u AAU season with Manimal Elite.
- Is there one particular play or special game that stands out in your mind?
In 7th grade I hit my first game winner against Adair County. I dribbled down the court and did a euro step for the game winner.
- When did you know you were ready to commit and what drew you to TCC?
I knew I wanted to commit when coach Zach Settembre came to my house around 11:30 at night to talk to me and my family. But I waited. So about a week later I went on a visit down there and I loved everything about the school. I love how they play, the coaching staff, and I love coach Zach. I feel like I can trust him so the next day my parents told me to go for it so I did.
- If you could give basketball or life advice to younger you, what would it be and why?
Separate yourself. Trust me, in the end everything will play out accordingly. You can’t cheat the grind. It knows who’s invested time in their craft and who hasn’t.
- If a high school freshman asked you how to reach the next level, what would you tell them?
I would tell him to work right now . Be in the gym when nobody is looking and separate yourself from everyone else. If you really have dreams of playing at the next level you can’t have fun all the time . You gotta put in those hours in the gym.
