Austin Andrews (junior, Eden Prairie). The many pivots, shoulder turns, fakes, and angled touch shots of Austin Andrews was something the North Polars could not stop or really even slow down. Andrews also went to the foul line to make 8 of 9 free throws plus was one rebound shy of a double-double (21 points and 9 rebounds on 7 of 15 field goal shooting). Around the basket Austin is playing chess where game after game many opponents are still defending him with checkers on the mind.
Eli Campbell (senior, Minneapolis North). Eli Campbell is Mr. Second Half. Whenever I’ve seen him play in whatever uniform over the past three years he just seems to be that guy that takes the responsibility on his shoulders to lead his team down the stretch. He made four threes in the second half scoring 19 points total (made 7 of 14 field goals overall). Eli is that guy that can go on a 9-0 run on his own changing momentum.
John Henry (junior, Eden Prairie). John Henry the EP smooth shooting wing was like John Henry the steel driving man with a hammer last night. John had a game high dozen rebounds plus hit his customary multiple threes scoring 12 points (shot 5 of 10 for the game). At his size with a touch to extend the defense he could fall in the “specialist” category but at EP he gets a strong defensive education.
Drake Dobbs (junior, Eden Prairie). No Drake’s best game as he had some stretches of misses and some turnovers but Drake also rebounded from mistakes to have a solid game overall. He made a pair of thees and went 8 of 8 from the foul line for 15 point game with five assists (3 of 9 field goal shooting). Also, after his commitment to Liberty, I hear that insurance commercial “Liberty Liberty Liberty, Liberty” in my head every time he makes a shot.
Connor Christensen (junior, Eden Prairie). Connor is the ultimate “find a way to help the team win guy”. He was another player making foul shots late (5 for 5), Connor moved the ball for four assists, and the biggest thing he did last night was chase down ten boards. Connor recently picked up an offer from Air Force during an unofficial visit. Christensen shot 3 of 7 for the game, 5 of 7 at the foul line.
Davon Townley (sophomore, Minneapolis North). Townley was one of three players to put together a double-double in last night’s game. He had ten boards to go with five field goals (11 points) making five of nine field goals. In the last two outings I’ve really gained an appreciation for how well Davon is separating from other posts by using much improved footwork to find space.
Ariel Bland (junior, Eden Prairie). Bland was an issue for North early in the game scoring three quick field goals at the rim. North just didn’t have two frontcourt guys that could consistently keep a body on Ariel AND Austin. Bland had a solid 14 points on 5 of 6 field goal shooting (4 of 6 at the line).
Willie WIlson (freshman, Minneapolis North). I just love the way that Willie slashes to the basket. It’s so smooth and effortless with a high regularity of positive results. Wilson scored 14 points on a 6 of 16 shooting evening with most of his production coming later. When Wilson adds some strength to his core and his length extends in a taller, longer body he’s going to be a very exciting prospect.
Nasir El-Amin (senior, Minneapolis North). Scored ten points with three assists making 3 of 10 field goal attempts. Not El-Amin’s best game but he was still one of the best players on the floor.
Clifford Brown (sophomore, Minneapolis North). The sophomore had a nice run in the second half making back to back threes and attacking for a score. His energy off the bench gave the Polars some second half hope.
