Last night, February 15, it was a defensive matchup between the Fyffe Red Devils and the Sacred Hearts Cardinals in the 2A Northeast Regional at Jacksonville State University. Fyffe came in as the number one team in 2A and Sacred Heart had previously won four straight 1A championships. Both teams shot the ball poorly the entire game and went to half tied at only 15: a style of play that clearly favored Fyffe more. In the third quarter, though, Sacred Heart’s Jayden Stone caught fire and they erupted to a 34-23 lead at the end of three. Parker Godwin tried to lead the Red Devils back but came up a little short with Sacred Heart winning 47-37. Fyffe will finish a terrific season and Sacred Heart will continue its quest for yet another state title game.
Key Observations
Jayden Stone: Not Over til It’s Over
People say that good players keep shooting no matter what slump they are in. It looked like Jayden Stone was going to have a rough night and see his season come to an end. Nothing seemed to fall anywhere on the court and he appeared to be forcing his shots. Maybe it was “Michael’s Secret Stuff” at half time or something else, but he came out balling in the second half. He was hitting jump shots and attacking the rim. It was definitely over when Stone took the ball coast to coast and finished with a 2-handed dunk late in the fourth quarter. He would finish with 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinals.
More of Moore
The 6’6” junior Aaron Moore was huge inside the paint tonight for the Cardinals. With his length and athleticism, it was extremely hard to slow him down all night. When Fyffe’s Tucker Goolsby went to the bench for foul trouble, Sacred Heart immediately went to Moore inside and he took advantage. He was relentless on both the offensive and defensive boards and proved to be too much.
Defense Wins Championships
Sacred Heart proved there’s a reason that people say, “Defense wins championships”. From the start, they pressed full court and trapped forcing countless turnovers. They dove on the ball for loose balls and took critical charges to swing the advantage. Their defense kept them in the game early on when the shots were not falling, but was icing on the cake when the shots started to fall in the second half.
Parker Godwin
Godwin led the Red Devils in scoring with 13 points on the night. He kept the momentum up for Fyffe with a huge coast-to-coast layup at the buzzer to end the first half. He handles the ball so well. In the fourth quarter, he made an impressive two-move attack to the rim and gracefully finished with his off hand. He tried his hardest to keep his team in the game, but to no avail.
Tucker Goolsby
Tucker Goolsby is a force to be reckoned with in the post. He worked hard on the glass and was a necessity to box out. He got into early foul trouble and that hurt the Red Devils a lot because Sacred Heart was able to take advantage more inside. Without him on the court, they did not have the paint protector and Jayden Stone and Aaron Moore picked it apart.
