Here’s what you need to know about Section 2AA
It hasn’t been a pretty year for a lot of teams in Section 2AA as just two teams will enter the postseason with winning records. Down years seemingly all at once have hit this section to the point that Jordan – the defending section champ – looks like the runaway favorite to head back to state.
Favorite: Jordan
The Hubmen have enjoyed quite the season, with just three losses and 18 wins (and counting), Jordan is the runaway favorite to win Section 2AA-North. Ryan Samuelson is the best perimeter player in the section as the junior guard has taken his game to another level. He’s averaging better than 19 points per game. He’s joined by Reagan Koch (11.3 ppg) and Thomas Gutzmer (11.7 ppg).
The Hubmen have experience as a number of a key guys are back from last year’s state tournament team. They’ve got talent. They are the favorite.
Next Up: St. Peter
St. Peter has been one of the surprise teams in Class AA as the Saints are on track to win 20 games and look like the runaway favorite in Section 2AA-South. Wyatt Olson is one of the best big men in the area and he’s joined up front by Seth Lokensgard. Josh Johnson gives them a big guard who can create his own shot.
The Saints lost to Jordan by six earlier in the season and has played a tough schedule as part of the Big South Conference, so they should be well-tested heading into the postseason.
In the Mix: Glencoe-Silver Lake, Belle Plaine, Maple River
With just two teams posting winning records at this point in the season, any team other than Jordan and St. Peter getting to a section final would be quite a feat. But there are teams that certainly have the ability to channel something special for a week or two and make some noise.
Belle Plaine’s got a solid trio of scorers in Josh Gregory, Alex Meyer and Dylan Kahle. Gregory has been a breakout guy during his junior season, averaging better than 16 points per game.
Glencoe-Silver Lake has a solid trio of guards in Dane Schwirtz, Mitchel Jaskowiak and Gabe Roepke. Jaskowiak is a player to watch as he’s turned in a very nice season and he’s just a freshman.
Maple River went into the season with high expectations and the Eagles have been one of the surprise teams in Class AA because of a lack of success. The Eagles have good players though in Mason Sohre and Justin Caven. Mason Schirmer is a player to watch. He’s just an eighth-grader and while some of his production has been circumstantial, he’s shown flashes of a guy worth getting excited about.
