The sweet-shooting 6-foot-4, 190-pound wing has been getting the job all year long for Tigard High School in just about every conceivable category as the Tigers have been in the Top Ten all season. But while the individual accolades will pour in – he’s picked up his first college scholarship offer – Schlabach remains focused on the team and their goals for March.
“I think we have a really good team and I believe that we can make it to the Chiles Center – we all believe that.” Schlabach said. ” We have nine seniors this year and we’ve been playing with each other since sixth grade so we have a lot of chemistry. I’m just trying to lead my team and do what I can to win.”
Schlabach has certainly done his part. At the end of the day each game the statsheet will usually read 20+ points, most likely 10+ boards, and a number of assists and blocked shots with the Tigers more often than not securing a win. For a while, Schlabach was starting to wonder if college coaches were paying any kind of attention to what he was doing – and sure enough, the patience has paid off.
“I recently picked up an offer from NCU,” Schlabach said. “I went down there for a visit to watch a game and the visit was really good. I liked the location; it’s right on the Oregon campus, and the basketball team is good – they’re in the Top 25 in the nation right now. And I like how it’s a small school with small classes. It feels good (to get the offer) and hopefully more will come.”
Schlabach notes that he’s been talking to Corban a lot and they have also invited him to come down for a game, and he continues to talk with Portland State as well. He’s going to play out the season before making any kind of decisions, and his hope is that he and the Tigers will achieve their goal of making the state tournament.
“We have two big games this week in Tualatin and Oregon City and while we’ve beaten them before we’ve got to beat them again to get a good playoff spot,” Schlabach said. “For myself, I’m just doing me really, I’m not flashy or anything, but I want to show other teams that we’re real and we can compete with them.”
Schlabach currently ranks as the #8 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
