The versatile 6-foot-7, 175-pound senior just led Ellensburg to a league championship and now it’s on to the post-season where anything is possible. Venters heads into the playoffs having earned his first Division I scholarship offer – all a reward for the type of senior year he was hoping to have in 2018-19.
“The season has gone really good for me,” Venters said. “I’m averaging a lot more assists and I’ve been getting my teammates involved more.”
Venters came up huge in the CWAC title game, outdueling Selah guard and UC Davis signee Elijah Pepper. Venters put up a game-high 32 points which included a couple of clutch shots near the end of the game to secure the win. How did the versatile wing celebrate the win? He took a campus visit and picked up what he was hoping for – his first offer.
“I just visited Eastern Washington and they offered me a scholarship which was pretty cool,” Venters said. “I really liked their staff – they were really hands on and their facilities were always open to shoot. I like the way they play – they play like motion.”
While Venters enjoyed himself on the trip, he didn’t commit. He’s still weighing options from Central Washington, St. Martin’s, and some other GNAC schools and is staying open to other future possibilities. “(EWU) was really cool but I’m still going to wait it out and see what I can pick up in the spring,” he said.
Part of the reason there’s no rush to make a decision is that there are still games to be played. Ellensburg has a little bit of time off but playoffs start this upcoming weekend and then it’s nothing but business from there on out. “I think we just have to stay focused throughout the whole (post) season – it’s a pretty long season,” Venters said. “We’re big so we’ve just go to move the ball around and score.”
